Market Report Tuesday 2nd December

Some excellent stock on show which is a credit to the vendors and some great prices achieved reflecting the quality on offer, it was lovely to see so many of our valued customers enjoying the day.

BARREN COWS

A strong trade in the barrens today with averages up on the week, top call of 284p/kg for a Limousin cow weighing 930kg to gross £2641.20 for D & A Stonier of Congleton.

Another Limousin sold to 264p/kg for a cow weighing 710kg to gross £1874.40 for M J D Farms of Alstonefield.

Holstein achieved 260p/kg, weighing 900kg to gross £2340 for D & G Tudor of Kingsley Moor.

CLEAN
A good entry for the Christmas Show and Sale today with a big thank you to Katie James of W James Butcher’s for judging and awarding Champion Beast 2025 to a 600kg Limousin heifer from Mark Sweetmore of Earl Sterndale which went on to sell for 670p/kg to gross £4,020 to H Savages Meat Purveyors of Sheffield.

Reserve Champion and the Small Holders Cup went to a 615kg Limousin Heifer from Ian Brown of Werrington which went on to sell to 550p/kg to gross £3382.50 and was purchased by Ginger Butchers of New Close Farm, Bakewell.


A British Blue heifer weighing 575kg sold to 505p/kg to gross £2903 for Mark Sweetmore of Earl Sterndale who also had a Charolais heifer weighing 500kg selling to 450p/kg to gross £2250.

P J Hooley of Wildboarclough sold a Limousin heifer weighing 570kg to 420p/kg to gross £2394 and D Williams of Basford sold a Limousin heifer weighing 685kg to 338p/kg to gross £2315.

A British Blue bull weighing 615kg achieved 365p/kg to gross £2244.75 for J E Archer & Sons of Hilton.

Overall average for clean cattle was 329.99/kg.

A big thanks to David Partridge for judging this year.

David’s champions were a pair of 75kg Pietrain x Large White gilts from W Berry, Stocksbridge selling to 250p or £262.50.

Porkers looked well sold topping a 350p for the show champions and 242p for the second-place pigs from the same home. G&M Pawson had two cracking gilts selling to 246p or £183.27

Cutters topped for W Berry at 224p twice who had first and second in the cutters class. Rosie Watson sold to 208p. J&B Fentem sold to 206p, 200p. C Armstrong to 202p.

Bacon pigs sold to 300p for W Berry who took first place in the bacon pigs, W Berry had others to 240p. Massie Farms to 230p, 221p, 214p, 213p, x2, 211p, 208p, 207p x4, 205p. A&R Bowers sold to 224p for second prize. PF+PD Parsons sold to 210p, 203p. C Hine to 203p. D Goldtraw to 203p.

Heavies sold to 199p or £218.90 for C Hine. PF+PD Parsons to 195p, 183p. J&B Fentem to 150p for boars.

Champion sow to 80p or £257.60 for Rosie Watson, MR Banham to 60p.

A smaller entry in the dairy shed on Primestock Show week.

Top call of the day was £2320 for a Topbrass Pedigree heifer from the Brassington family of Calf Heath, sold giving well over 31kg she went to the Sellors family at Matlock.

Other heifers giving 28kg £1600 – £1800.

Next week we have the sale on behalf of the Thompson family at Sparrowpit with catalogues available.

The annual Christmas show and sale will be held on Tuesday 16th December with both heifer and cow classes.

A good entry for the Christmas show, seeing a good trade throughout for both show lambs and commercials.

Champion pen of the day came from Wayne Allen of Butterton for an exceptional pair of 53kg lambs that went on to sell for 940p/kg to H Savages Meat Purveyors of Sheffield, grossing just under £500/head. Wayne also won the best heavy pen of five which sold to the judge Rob Davenport at 410p/kg for 55.6kg lambs.

Best show lambs generally 380p – 420p/kg.

Thank you to Rob Davenport for judging the lambs and doing a very thorough job.

Similar numbers of ewes to last week with a good entry of meated ewes for the show and sale, meated ewes in strong demand and attracting a premium, grazing ewes actively bid for and much sought after, looking well sold on the day.

Trade remaining strong and plenty of buyers around the ring for all sorts with bull calves averaging £400 right through.

A strong show of Continental bulls met good demand with nearly half the entry selling to above £500 and only a small handful under £300. Top call today was £695 for the Wiliamson’s for a cracking British Blue with others just behind at £690 and £680 for the Milners and Furness families respectively.
