BARREN COWS

Trade was sharp in the Barrens with a good company of buyers to which more could be sold weekly.

Top price of the day was a Holstein cow weighing 530kg, selling to 279p/kg to a gross of £1478.70 for P & M Critchlow of Cubley.

Top headage price of the day was £1968.40 for a 760kg Friesian, selling to 259p/kg from RG & AS Williamson of Wetley Rocks.

A Hereford bull weighing 940kg sold to 258p/kg to gross £2425.20 from C Heath & Sons of Longsdon.

Overall average for barrens was 234.61p/kg with an average headage price of £1542.13.

CLEAN CATTLE
A 510kg Hereford heifer sold to 330p/kg to gross £1683/head for AM & JE Kirby of Rutland.

A good show of fat pigs today with new vendors coming to Leek. Fat pigs topped at 216p for B Vernon with better gilts 200-210p, boars 165-175p.

Porkers sold to 203p for J&B Fentem who had others at 202p x2, 201p.
Cutters sold to 216p for Ben Vernon who had others at 168p. A shinton to 206p, PF+PD Parsons to 203p.

Bacon pigs met a solid trade topping at 214p for Massie Farms who had others to 213p, 207p, 205p, 202p, 201p. PF+PD Parsons to 204p, 202p, 201p. Chris Hine to 201p.

Ben Barlow had heavy boars to 152p, AJ&RA Wainwright to 135p, PJ Saunders saw 132p.

One Stock boar sold to 50p for D W Brown.

Not quite the show of quality sows as last week, top price 80p for DW Brown for a 366kg sow.

A smaller entry but customers for all categories yet again. Several purchasers leaving empty handed, and more could definitely have been sold.

Top call £2260 for two heifers from separate vendors. First up was Andrew Hadfield at Peak Forest with his best heifer giving 30kg and second was Diane & Edward Bennett with a homebred heifer, calved only seven days.

The best five averaged £2235.

LAMBS (744)
A good entry of lambs selling on a very good trade with plenty of demand for all types. Best lambs regularly at 400p/kg and better to a top of 420p/kg. Six different vendors breaking the 400p/kg barrier.

Best to sell are the heavy weights which flew away to £216.24 for 53kg lambs (408p/kg) for Roy Critchlow. Multiple pens at £200/head and better.

Small and lean types hard to sell but still finding customers at 300p/kg – 320p/kg generally.

45kg and over AVERAGE 365p/kg or £178/head.

Overall average at 353p/kg or £149.50/head.

More could be sold to vendor’s advantage.
