BARREN COWS

A fast trade in the barrens today and some excellent prices achieved.

A smashing Limousin cow weighing 640kg topped the day at 311p/kg to gross £1990.40 for E Vaughan of Newcastle.

HG & J Evans of Macclesfield had two Charolais cows weighing 760kg and 810kg selling to 286p/kg and 279p/kg to gross £2173.60 and £2259.90 respectively.

A dairy Shorthorn weighing 700kg from SJ Hooley of Macclesfield achieved 275p/kg to gross £1925.

Top headage price of the day was £2259.90 for the Charolais from HG & J Evans.

The overall average was a very respectable 225.20p/kg.

CLEAN CATTLE

A 625kg Hereford heifer sold to 340p/kg to gross £2125 for AM & JE Kirby and an Aberdeen Angus heifer sold to 316p/kg to gross £2069.80 for AP Wain of Forsbrook.

The overall average was 327.72p/kg with a top headage price of £2125.

A good show of pigs forward today fats sold to 224p or £225.68 and sows to 68p and £182.70.

Porker sold to 224p for Ben Vernon, B Palfryman had boars to 212p, J&B Fentem to 205p.

Cutters sold to 216p for J&B Fentem who had others at 202p, 198p. B Palfryman to 198p. C Hine to 204p.

Bacon pigs sold to 217p for N Brown to gross £225.68. Massie Farms to 215p, 210p, 209p, 205p, 204p, 203p, 202p. J&B Fentem to 201p, B Minshull to 200p,

Boars to 173p for B Vernon. Heavies sold to 123p for M Carefoot.

Sows to 68p for Gavin and Mandy Pawson and 58p for J McAleenan.

DAIRIES TO £3550

Another very strong trade for milkers despite the ongoing grass shortages saw the best peak at £3550 and 6 pass the £3000 mark.

Taking top honours with their second calver Broomhouse Mendel Phillis 8061 was the Easom family of Oakerthorpe. They also had a heifer by Denovo 3709 Charter to £3400.

Regular vendors, the Westons of Roston had a smashing run of heifers in with three reaching £3380, £3350 and £3200.

Martin Riley of Longnor showed a very pretty heifer that made £3150.

Bullers from John Kirby of Oakham topped at £1300.

LAMB SECTION (1045)

A good entry met a slower trade on the week but still well in line with other outlets. The increased numbers were easily absorbed by our buyers and the slower trade was a result of the national trade not our increased numbers.

Best lambs to 372p/kg and best heavy lambs good to sell to a top of £205.20/head. Meated commercial lambs generally 315p – 340p and lean grass-fed lambs around 300p.

Overall average at 318p/kg or £136/head.

A solid price but certainly not as dear as they were a month ago. A tremendous British Blue found many admirers and sailed away to £790 for Messrs Wilkinson, Great Budworth with better bulls generally £420 – £650. Mediums bulls £370 – £400 with just a handful under £370.
