A better show of barrens on offer this week with some excellent prices achieved, topping at 276p/kg for a 715kg Limousin cow to gross £1973.40 for J Gilman & Partners of Bosley.

Holstein cows topped at 267p/kg to gross £1682.10 for a cow weighing 630kg for P & M Critchlow of Cubley and an 845kg Holstein sold to 265p/kg to gross £2239.25/head, being the top headage price of the day for J & R Maydew of Consall.

The overall average saw an incredible £87 increase per head on the week at 222.6p/kg or £1458.31/head.

CLEAN
A mixed entry of clean cattle on offer this week with a number of smaller sorts bringing down the averages.

Friesians topped the day at 297p/kg for a 605kg steer to gross £1796.85 for Roston Farms who also had three Holstein steers to 293p/kg, 290p/kg and 276p/kg to gross £1655.45, £1638.50 and £1545.60.

A 380kg Friesian topped the heifers at 245p/kg to gross £931 for RA Lomas & Partners.

Overall average was 252.43p/kg.

Another good show of pigs met a competitive demand topping at 211p for gilts. Gilts today generally 190p – 205p and boars 150p – 160p.

Porkers sold to 150p for RA Hughes.

Cutters sold to 185p for RA Hughes for gilts. G Weston sold hoggs to 160p, 158p. A Shinton 155p.

Bacon pigs sold to 211p for Massie Farms who had others at 208p, 207p, 206p, 205p & 203p. PF+PD Parsons to 202p, 200p & 197p. J&B Fentem to 195p.

Heavies a few more today which were mainly boars were a bit harder work but still met good demand. PF+PD Parsons 154p. C Hine to 149p, L Harding saw 120kg boars to 134p and 122p.

Sows very much hard work today with feeding sows rough sows selling at 20p.

Dairy Shorthorn Calves to £730
A surprisingly buoyant trade both for the pedigree entry and the herd sale, despite the turbulent times within the dairy industry.

Trade topped at £3100 for an unregistered heifer by Liway Sil from George Swindell of Chelmorton. Two heifers from the Meldamar Herd of Messrs Shepherd both reached £3000.

Cows topped at £2640 for a second calver from the Easom family of Oakerthorpe who also had another second calver to £2600.

Dairy Shorthorn calves from the Broadlane Herd of Messrs Norbury were an exceptional trade topping at £730.

A reasonable entry reduced somewhat no doubt by the talk of reduced trade at other outlets.

Demand on the day was better than expected and best lambs were good to sell. Best at 360p/kg and better to a top of 389p/kg. Best big lambs to £205.92 and multiple at £180/head plus.

Commercial lambs generally 310p – 330p/kg for heavy weights and heavies 285p – 300p/kg.

Overall average at 317p/kg or 330p/kg SQQ.

A super entry and the trade continues to amaze with some medium calves as dear as we have ever seen them.

Strong money for all classes and breeds but the medium bulls simply off the clock. Mark Hodgkinson led the way with his best British Blue bull at £725 with six more over £600. Mediums generally £440 – £580 with just four smaller bulls under £400.
