Not enough Barrens to meet demand today seeing a top price of £2227 for an 850kg Charolais cow which sold to 262p/kg for HG & J Evans of Macclesfield.

Close behind was a 625kg Montbeliarde which sold to 260p/kg to gross £1625 for EB & BM Sutton of Congleton.

Hot haymaking days always cut numbers, but the dairy trade was good.

Top priced heifer from Edward and Diane Bennett bred by the Bradbury’s at High Needham went on to make £3080 and sold giving 28kg.

In the cows, pedigree breeder Steve Crookes travelled down from Chesterfield to take home £2940 for his 2nd calver, sold fresh 17 days giving 43kg.

A very good entry average of £2655 and definitely more could have been sold to vendor’s advantage.

A quiet day as expected in light of the haymaking weather. Trade has fallen nationally over the last week, but we were delighted to buck the trend and achieve excellent prices throughout.

The best sorts were very well bid for and plenty of competition to a top of 475p/kg and plenty of pens at 450p – 470p/kg.

Best big lambs to 461p/kg or £262.08/head. Heavy lambs 45kg plus averaged £202/head.

Many more could be sold to vendor’s advantage.

Overall average at 431p/kg or £187/head.
