Market Report 10th August

A great turnout of butchers lambs and what an electric trade!! Best types raced away up to 290p/kg, and those you sold lambs today went away very happy with the prices achieved. Average of £100 per head and overall average of 242.15p/kg. Cull ewes in short supply but another strong trade up to £162.

Another excellent trade for barrens selling up to 177p/kg for an Angus and overall average of 132.40p/kg says it all!! Clean cattle also well bid for up to 230p/kg for a smart 665kg Limousin heifer from Reg Critchlow.

A mixed sample of dairies but a good demand for all types with two super heifers from Michael Wainwright at £2060 and £1980.

Pigs were a little sharper in price with the averages up for bacon pigs topping at 129p/kg or £120.64.

More calves about and selling to a packed ring of buyers some spirited bidding up to £390 for Blue bull calves and heifers to £315.

What a lift in trade this week!! Some excellent prices achieved up to 177p/kg for a 495kg Angus from R J Allcock, Waterhouses with a 760kg Beef Shorthorn realising 170p/kg.

Black & white’s topped at 169p/kg for BJ Archer, Hilton and 148p/kg for a 775kg Holstein from Peter Woodward.

Top headage price of £1292 for the 760kg Beef Shorthorn cow with Holsteins to £1150.80 and £1147, Herefords to £1131.90 and Limousins to £1092.10.

A good entry this Tuesday selling on a solid trade up to 230p/kg for a 665kg Limousin heifer from Reg Critchlow, Grindon, who also sold a 690kg Limousin steer at 208p/kg.

Other steers sold up to 228p/kg for a 465kg Limousin from Peter & David Richardson, Ipstones who also sold a 535kg Limousin for 218p/kg.

A 625kg Aberdeen Angus heifer realised 205p/kg from Glyn Redfern, Onecote and a run of 3 Simmental heifers at 570-590kg made 204p/kg and 203p/kg twice.

Two Friesian bulls sold well to 190p/kg for a 615kg bull and 185p/kg for a 560kg bull, both from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

Top headage prices of £1529.50 for the Limousin heifer from Reg Critchlow with Angus heifers to £1281.25 and Simmentals to £1203.60. Steers topped at £1435.20, with others at £1166.30 and bulls to £1168.50.

Trade continues at a pace with a good line up of buyers looking for replacement stock. The best continue to sell best and two smart heifers from Michael Wainwright led the day. His Pedigree two year old newly calved heifers sold at £2060 and £1980 and both purchased by John Moss.

Derek Davenport, Sandbach also sold smart heifers at £1880 and £1840, both newly calved and giving 21kg daily.

Plenty of cows today and these were topped by a second calver from the Barber family, Gnosall who made £1800 and also had a third calver at £1750.

One baby Shorthorn heifer calf at two weeks old made £300 from Trevor Swinson, Caverswall.

Topping the day in the dairy ring was a strong Pedigree Angus bull from Martin Farrington. This 3 year old stock getter made £2100 after spirited bidding from several parties.

A few less about and trade slightly improving, but better pigs selling well. Pork pigs sold to 105p/kg for 74kg pigs from J & B Fentem.

Cutters topped at 114p/kg for a 76kg pig from J & B Fentem, who sold others at 110p/kg, 100p/kg and 98p/kg. A pair of 85kg pigs made 106p/kg from PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch, and a 84kg pig at 104p/kg for Steve Bailey.

Bacon pigs sold up to 129p/kg for an 88kg pig from Bernard Minshull, Buxton, with a pair of 88kg pigs at 124p/kg for J & B Fentem who also sold a pen of 4 at 120p/kg. The Parsons sold bacon pigs at 120p/kg twice and 118p/kg twice with another pen from Bernard Minshull at 116p/kg.

Heavier pigs sold to 103p/kg for a pen of 4 105kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with a 106kg pig at 99p/kg from Bernard Minshull.

Plenty of sows in again this week sold on a decent trade to 71p/kg for a 273kg sow from Ray Rowlinson, and a run from another home at 69p/kg, 64p/kg x6 and 61p/kg.

A similar show of lambs selling on an electric trade, particularly for the best tyres flying away to 290p/kg and plenty at 270p and better. Thank you for those who responded to the call for best lambs!!

Light lambs a fierce trade start to finish, selling to 272p/kg to average 250p/kg for a mixed sample. Heavy lambs the best trade of the day but some excellent types in the entry. Best heavy lambs to gross an exceptional £153.70 and heavy lambs to average £121/head.
