A good entry of dairies for the Monthly Pedigree Sale incorporating the Dairy Shorthorn Show & Sale, selling up to £2300 for heifers and Shorthorns to £1900.
A strong entry of sheep this week with 1560 forward with lambs selling up to 285p/kg to average at 231p/kg and still over £100/head! Cull ewes also well sought after, albeit a little less but top price of £152/head.
Barren cows sold well up to 157p/kg twice or £1214.70 with a good ring of buyers. Clean cattle sold up to 220p/kg twice for Simmental Steers.
Pigs were a solid trade, and selling well on the day with numerous pens 150p and above. Top price of 167p/kg for bacon pigs.
Calves sold to a more hesitant ringside of buyers but the best continue to sell well and less quality sorts a little tricky to place. Top price of £375 for Blue bulls and heifers to £355.

Top price of 157p/kg twice, for a 655kg British Blue from FG JM & TE Carnwell, Dilhorne and also for a 645kg Friesian from C V Whilock & Sons, Ipstones. A 855kg Aberdeen Angus realised 142p/kg for A P Buckle, Boundary and a 660kg Montbeliarde at 133p/kg for FA & TM Cotton, Tean.
A 705kg Dairy Shorthorn realised 132p/kg for S & J Ryder, Dilhorne, a 530kg British Blue at 130p/kg for F & J Barlow, Froghall and a 725kg Holstein at 129p/kg for WG & J Clark, Bradnop.
Overall average of 114.82p/kg or £715.97 per head.
Top headage price of £1214.10 for A P Buckle, Boundary, £1028.35 for British Blues, Friesians to £1012.65 and Holsteins to £935.25.

A small entry and no best quality sorts forward but cattle sold well on the day. Top price of 220p/kg twice for 720kg and 620kg Simmental steers from Rushton Spencer. Other steers to 210p/kg for a 755kg Simmental from the same home and 203p.kg for a 590kg Charolais from T Partington, Burton.
Heifers sold up to 215p/kg for a 470kg Limousin from J Forrester, Tean and 207p/kg for a 525kg British Blue from FG, JM & TE Carnwell, Dilhorne and 206p/kg for a 545kg Limousin from the same home. A 560kg Limousin made 206p/kg for J Forrester.
Bulls sold to 210p/kg for a 700kg Charolais from C & EJ Whilock, Werrington.
Top headage price of £1585.50, £1584 and £1364 for Simmental steers, with heifers to £1153.60 and £1122.60 and Bulls up to £1470 and £1437.85.

A terrific entry on Tuesday of 120 Dairies saw a 100% clearance with a top price of £2300.
Broomhouse Achiever Quest 6797 from Messrs Easom was an ABS Achiever daughter out of an 86 point dam. Sold for £2300 giving 32.5kg she went to Messrs Bradbury of Earl Sterndale.
Top cow was also from the Broomhouse Herd selling for £1850. A second calver giving 42kg she went to the same home.
A lovely entry of 38 Shorthorns attracted much interest with a second calver Amber Princess Anne 129 GP81 taking first in the cow class and overall champion from J Hole & Sons, Ashover. She went on to sell for £1700.
However it was a heifer from the same home Amber Lady Annetta 93 that topped at £1900. By Amber Lightening she went to Messrs Howard of Guide, Blackburn.
A very pretty 1 month old calf from Rob Kite reached £580. By Blackwood Park Butternut, she boasted 4 gens VG/EX.
Next week we have the Herd Sale on behalf of Messrs Carter. These are really everything you want in a cow, great type, milk, genetic merit and high herd health.

A very strong trade for pigs today, especially for prime weights with numerous pens 150p and above.
Pork pigs topped at 144p/kg for a 69kg pig from A Worth, Marton and 73kg pigs at 118p/kg for J & B Fentem.
Cutters sold up to 161p/kg for a 84kg pig from D J Pope, Thame. Other to 149p/kg, 147p/kg, 146p/kg and 142p/kg for J & B Fentem and a trio of 80kg pigs at 141p/kg for P Allen, Brailsford.
Bacon pigs were a remarkable trade topping at 167p/kg for 93kg pigs from D J Pope, Thame who sold others at 166p/kg, 164p/kg and 162p/kg. 92kg pigs realised 156p/kg for J & B Fentem, who also had a 100kg pig at 156p/kg and a 89kg pig at 143p/kg from Bernard Minshull. Others at 125p/kg and above!
Only 5 heavier pigs sold at 130p/kg for 105kg pigs and 118p/kg for 110kg pigs, all from AD & J Potts, Astbury.
Cull sows sold up to 70p/kg for a 223kg sow from Bernard Minshull who also sold a 219kg sow for 69p/kg, A 342kg sow realised 68p/kg for R A Watson, Fenny Bentley, and W Rigby & Son sold sows at 67p/kg, 64p/kg, and 63p/kg twice.

A few more lambs about seeing another very pleasing trade, albeit back on last weeks flyer, partly due to national trends and partly due to not having quite the same quality forward overall.
Some excellent lambs forward, in places seeing very competitive bidding on no less than last week. Tony Gilman topped the sale at 285p/kg for an outstanding pen of lambs. Heavy lambs again in strong demand, topping at 253p or £127.63.
Overall average of 231p/kg or £101 per head.

A good line up of calves but the appalling warm, wet weather and expected higher costs on feed this winter certainly weighed heavy on the minds of the buyers at the ringside.
