Market Report 23rd August

A busy Tuesday market with a shed full of lambs and cull sheep, with some good prices achieved, especially for meated and heavier lambs. Top price of 266p/kg with an overall average of 237.32p/kg. Cull ewes sold up to £195/head.

A full ring of buyers forward for the Montbeliarde dispersal on behalf of Buxton Partners, Barlaston saw heifers to £2460. In the commercials, a fresh second calver sold to £2720.

A solid trade for pigs seeing the best to 194p/kg and plenty 180p/kg and above.

Barrens continue to sell well, seeing the best to 174p/kg or £1496.40. Clean cattle sold up to 226p/kg.

Calves a little less on the week but good demand for all, with bulls to £342 and heifers to £380.

Cull cattle still a strong trade but lacking on the best beef types this Tuesday with the best to 174p/kg for a 860kg Simmental cow from J D Alcock, Elkstones. Black & white’s to 161p/kg for a 760kg Holstein and 159p/kg for a 735kg Holstein from WE Turnock & Sons, Onecote.

A Hereford 675kg steer sold for 226p/kg from B G Clarkson, Gawsworth.

A very swift trade within the commercial section saw a second calver from the Needham family of Heaton top the day at £2720. Giving 40kg she went to Messrs Hall of Ipstones. Heifers from the same home reached £2520 with 5 out of the 6 animals forward from them passing the £2000 mark.

Regular vendors Michael Wainwright of Buxton saw three of this Holsteins reach or pass £2300.

The Montbeliarde herd dispersal on behalf of the Buxton family at Barlaston topped at £2460 for a July calved heifer by Lelabel. In-calf heifers topped at £1660 and yearling heifers to £300.

PIGS (182);

A bumper entry this week and the best selling well but a mixed quality forward affecting the averages.

Pork pigs sold up to 184p/kg for 74kg pigs from R Buckley, Sheffield with a 72kg pig at 180p/kg from J & B Fentem and a pen of 64kg pigs from Alan Worth, Marton.

Massie Farms topped the cutters with leading prices of 187p/kg, 186p/kg, 185p/kg and 184p/kg, with 84kg pigs at 183p/kg from J & B Fentem who also sold cutters at 178p/kg, 172p/kg and 169p/kg twice. A 82kg pig sold for 170p/kg for Alan Worth.

Bacon pigs topped the day at 194p/kg for a trio of 93kg pigs from David Goldstraw, Meerbrook with Massie Farms selling bacon pigs at 188p/kg, 185p/kg, 184p/kg and 176p/kg. A 94kg pig at 186p/kg from J & B Fentem who sold 87kg pigs at 184p/kg and 91kg pigs at 180p/kg.

A large entry of cull sows sold on a steady trade this week being generally 20p – 50p/kg depending on the quality and size.

LAMBS (1172);
Another strong entry of lambs forward seeing a solid competitive trade throughout. Weight and meat are both selling exceptionally well with 45kg plus averaging 243p/kg or £120/head. Also a large proportion of lean under finished lambs which generally traded at 210 – 220p/kg and an overall average reported of 237.32p/kg.

Best lambs to 266p and best lambs to 259p/kg or £153.60/head.

CULL SHEEP (365);
A much increased entry met another solid trade albeit at slightly reduced rates in line with the national trend.

Best continental ewes to £195/head from Jack Belfield and family. Meated Mules generally £85 – £110 depending on size and a large proportion of grazing types in the entry impacting the overall average.

Best rams to £150/head. Overall average of £88/head.

CALVES (157);

Good numbers of calves this week and a strong trade again. It really does pay to ‘do’ your calves well with very few best on offer but those that were here are very strong money. Smaller calves are well bid for but at lower levels than they perhaps should be.

45 Continental Bulls
Just 4 over £300 this week, more a reflection on the quality than trade. A very smart Limousin from Jim & Carol Hudson topped at £342. Mediums generally £230 – £280 with smaller, younger or plainer bulls under £200.

Possibly better sold than the bulls and plenty of customers but at a price. A posh suckler bred Charolais sold at £380 (3wks) with a trio of other Charolais at £320, £310 & £300 from Daz Tudor. Best over £230; mediums £140 – £200 with smalls under £130.
