LAMBS (1014);
A good entry selling on a respectable trade although somewhat back on last weeks flyer. Uncertainty on the currency value together with strikes on the ports making to export firms take a back seat.

Having said that, best lambs still good to sell and a competitive trade throughout and 100% clearance achieved. Best lambs to 260p/kg and regularly at 240p and better, but a lot of under finished lambs in the entry and these took the biggest price knock with plenty at 205 – 220p/kg.

Big lambs continue to be well bid for topping at £139.50 or 250p/kg for 52kg plus lambs.

Sample prices;
260p 41kg H D Simmonds, Longford
255p 43.2kg RG & AS Williamson, Wetley Rocks
253p 41.3kg J B Rowlinson & Son, Gawsworth
250p 44.7kg J H Mellor, Nantwich
248p 43kg R Belfield, Upper Hulme
257p 50kg H White, Snelston
250p 53kg RG & AS Williamson, Wetley Rocks
249p 51.2kg A D Williams, Basford

A good show in terms of quantity but the worth show in terms of quality for a long time. There was run after run of plain lean ewes showing the effects of the hard summer and lack of grass. Farmers obviously deciding to prioritise what grass they have for the breeding stock rather than improving their cull ewes.

Best ewes selling well up to £178 from Ed Massey of Gawsworth for outstanding Charollais ewes. Best Mules generally £110 – £135 and best Suffolk’s to £145.

Overall average at £75/head which reflects the offering rather than the demand.

Texel Rams to £184 from Jayne Barker of Onecote.
