Market Report 28th September

Farmers managed to get to the market this week even with a diesel shortage!! And their livestock meeting a solid trade for all sections.

Lambs for a much firmer trade, selling up to 287p/kg and £140.70 per head to average 234.4p/kg overall and just shy of £100 per head at £99.76! Ewes were also a really strong trade for the quality on offer, selling up to £159 for ewes and rams to £173.

Dairies sold up to £2160 for heifers from Michael Wainwright, with cos today selling to £1880.

Barrens met a firm enquiry, selling to 173p/kg and 166p/kg for Limousin cows, with clean cattle to 230p/kg twice.

Calves sold on a much improved trade this week with plenty of buyers returning for numbers. The best sold up to £435 for an excellent British Blue calf, with plenty over £350. Heifers just as strong sold up to £315.

Pigs sold on a similar trade this week with the best to 139p/kg and 138p/kg.

An excellent trade this Tuesday with quality meated sorts selling well. Top price of 173p/kg for a 675kg Limousin from P Ritter & Sons, Peak Forest who also sold a 710kg Limousin for 166p/kg.

A 770kg British Blue realised 159p/kg for A P Wain, Forsbrook. A 555kg Brown Swiss made 158p/kg for RG & AS Williamson, Wetley Rocks.

Top headage price of £1260 for the 875kg Charolais from K Tart, Werrington, with British Blues to £1224.30, Friesians to £1221.30 and Limousins to £1178.60 and £1167.75.

CLEAN CATTLE;
Selling time – 10:45am approx.

A small entry sold up to 230p/kg twice for a 635kg and 570kg Simmental heifers from Rishton Spencer.

Two Blue steers sold to 175p/kg for a 510kg steer and 171p/kg for a 475kg steer, both from Mitchell & Bradley, Siddington.

Top headage price of £1460.50 and £1311 for heifers.

DAIRIES (69);

A very mixed quality brought a mixed trade with third quality sorts very hard to find homes for. Heifers topped at £2160 for a 36kg heifer from Michael Wainwright of Buxton with another to £1900 from Messrs Easom.

Cows topped at £1880 for a powerful second calver also from Messrs Easom.

A similar trade for pigs this week, selling very well up to 139p/kg twice for 84kg pigs from D J Pope, Thame who also sold 82kg pigs for 133p/kg. A pair of 83kg pigs sold for 136p/kg for J & B Fentem, Alsop, and a 83kg pig made 136p/kg for Philip Kelsall.

Bacon pigs sold up to 138p/kg twice for 89kg and 98kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who also sold others at 137p/kg, 136p/kg and 135p/kg. a pair of 91kg pigs sold for 128p/kg from S J Pope, with the Parson of Whitchurch selling bacon pigs for 128p/kg twice, 122p/kg and 115p/kg.

Heavy pigs sold well to 130p/kg for a 111kg pigs from Philip Kelsall who also sold a 110kg pig for 128p/kg and a trio of 106kg pigs realised 115p/kg for the Parsons.

Two cull sows sold at 54p/kg for a 195kg sow and 52p/kg for a 147kg sow, both from Bernard Minshull.

Another good entry forward today and some excellent quality on offer and a sharper trade than anticipated with best quality lambs up to 287p/kg with several pens over 260p/kg to average a very pleasing 234.4p/kg overall with plenty of buying support.

Heavy lambs topped at 270p/kg for 47kg lambs with a top headage price of £140.70.

A very pleasing entry with trade very firm throughout with some excellent prices achieved. Rams up to £173 from Suffolks from RC & JM Torr of Macclesfield and £158 for Texel’s from P Melland of Bottomhouse. Continental ewes topped at £159 for Mosley & Son, Wormhill, and £157 for ewes from Ed Stubbs, Kingsley.

Best Mule ewes around £100 per head with high proportion of leaner and grazing ewes which also met a good enquiry with an overall average of £90.21.

Another bumper entry of calves this week and a packed ringside of buyers and some seasonal returning buyers led to a much improved entry throughout.

Look at the average and the lift in price. Buyers looking to restock after good store and finished cattle sales led to a very fast trade today with all calves sold in under 2 hours. 12 Best bulls topped £350 including the best 4 Blues over £415 to a high of £435 for a super calf from Richard Emmott, Lyme Park. Medium bulls £300 – £340 with 14 smaller bulls under £300.
