Market Report 30th August

Bank holiday Tuesday saw strong numbers in the sheep shed, with trade being similar to last week, seeing the best to 280p/kg, and £158/head. Overall average of 235.5p/kg. Cull ewes generally a better trade, seeing the best to £178.

Barrens continue to sell well, especially for meated, fed types with 178p/kg and £1459.60 achieved for black & whites. Clean up to 210p/kg.

Less pigs about this week, and good prices for the quality on offer, with the best to 168p/kg.

A good demand for dairies but less about this week, seeing some excellent prices up to £2380 for heifers.

A bumper show of calves this week, and a very mixed sample which saw the best up to £330 & heifers up to £292.

Some good prices achieved for the cattle on offer with the best to 178p/kg for a 820kg Holstein from E Morten & Sons, Barmoor Clough, with 176p/kg for a 690kg Friesian from Harrison Partners, Rushton and 169p/kg for a 575kg Simmental from D & G Tudor, Kingsley.

CLEAN CATTLE;
A small entry saw a 555kg Montbeliarde heifer realise 210p/kg from Home Farm, Rushton and a 705kg Hereford heifer to 203p/kg from B G Clarkson, Gawsworth.

A stylish heifer from Andrew Weston of Litton topped the day at £2380 with others from Messrs Phillips of Winkhill to £2200 and D Brailsford of Chesterfield at £2140.

Less about this week and trade slightly back but some good prices achieved. Porkers sold up to 160p/kg for a pair of 71kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with Alan Worth, Marton selling 65kg pigs at 156p/kg and 63kg pigs at 152p/kg and others at 148p/kg and 144p/kg.

Cutters sold to 168p/kg for 79kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with other at 160p/kg, 158p/kg etc. PF & PD Parsons sold cutters to 162p/kg for 81p/kg pigs, 158p/kg, 154p/kg & 146p/kg.

Bacon pigs sold to 167p/kg for 102kg pigs from R T Wilson, Oldham, who also sold 101kg pigs for 163p/kg. 86kg pigs sold to 164p/kg from the Parsons, who also sold 90kg pigs for 160p/kg and 92kg pigs for 158p/kg. The Fentems sold bacon pigs to 158p/kg, 152p/kg, 150p/kg.

Just one pair of heavy pigs at 106kg for 160p/kg from RT Wilson, Oldham.

A run of sows from the same home sold at 67p/kg for mixed weights (230kg – 280kg).

LAMBS (998);
A good entry for a bank holiday Tuesday saw a solid trade being very similar to the previous week. Generally not quite the same quality of lambs forward today. It really is paying to feed lambs this year, with an improved price per kilo for better finished lambs, and heavy sorts in very strong demand.

Best lambs today to 280p/kg and plenty at 260p and better. Big lambs very good to sell, topping at £158/head and 45kg plus averaging £117/head or 248p/kg.

A lot of under finished sorts again seeing plenty of bidding but at much lower figures, generally 210 – 220p/kg.

Overall average 235.5p/kg.

Ewes generally a stronger trade on the week topping at £178 for best Texel’s from K House, Congleton and £175 from Eddie Simpson, Winkhill.

Best Mules £110 – £120 bracket and strong Suffolk’s at £149.

Overall average of £96 for another very mixed sample.

A very big post August Bank Holiday entry and the best calves very good to sell but some third quality sorts harder to move.

Top call £330 for the Salts of Rudyard with a smart Limousin bull calf with the Blues, Angus and Lims all peaking at £300 or above.
