Market Report 6th September

A busy Tuesday Market with a shed full of lambs and cull sheep, with some good prices achieved especially for heavier types. The best to 274p/kg, and £1342.60/head. Overall average of 229p/kg. Cull ewes a solid trade, seeing the best to £210.

Barrens continue to sell well, especially for meated, fed types with 198p/kg and £1504.80 achieved for Limousins. Clean up to 275p/kg.

More pigs about this week, and good prices reflecting quality on offer, with the best to 191p/kg.

An excellent demand for dairies but lacking the quality forward from last week, seeing the top prices reach up to £1960 for heifers.

A quieter show of calves this week compared to last, and a very mixed sample which saw the best up to £375 & heifers up to £370.

Some good prices achieved for the cattle on offer with the best to 198p/kg for a 760kg Limousin from K L Potts from Mottram St Andrew, with 191p/kg for a 730kg Limousin from A Turnock & Sons, Horton and 188p/kg for a 610kg Friesian from F & J Barlow, Froghall.

Overall average of 154.74p/kg or £1005.56.

Top headage price of £1504.80 for the 760kg Limousin from the Potts’s, with Friesians to £1146.80 & £1105.00.

CLEAN CATTLE (7);
A modest entry saw a fast trade, with a smart Limousin Heifer achieving 275p/kg selling to Peter Lymer of JW Ash Butchers, Leek. Top headage of £1481.80 for a Charolais Heifer.

Black and White Bulls sold to 209p or £1254/head from JE Archer & Sons, Hilton.

More clean cattle could be sold each week!!

DAIRIES (33);
Selling time – 11:30am

Trade much bouncier this week despite the lack of quality forward.
Topping the day was Edward & Diane Bennett at £1960 with other More third quality heifers in the £1300 – £1600 bracket.
More quality definitely needed to satisfy the current demand. Many buyers in attendance went home empty handed.

PIGS (127);
Selling time – 9:15am

A stronger show of pigs this week with trade better than last seeing some solid prices achieved. Porkers sold up to 191p/kg for a pair of 67.5kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with Alan Worth, Marton selling 63kg pigs at 189p/kg and 68kg pigs at 179p/kg and others at 176p/kg and 166p/kg.

Cutters sold to 188p/kg for a pair of 80kg pigs from R & L Vernon, Rocester with pigs selling at 184p/kg from J & B Fentem. Others sold cutters to 181p/kg, 172p/kg and 171p/kg etc.

Bacon pigs sold to 192p/kg for 92.7kg pigs from Massie Farms, Stafford who also sold 95.5kg pigs for 188p/kg. 90kg pigs sold to 186p/kg from the Fentems, who also sold 90kg pigs for 182p/kg and 87.6kg pigs for 162p/kg. D B Goldstraw, Meerbrook sold bacon pigs to 175p/kg and164p/kg.

A few more heavy pigs than last week, with the best at 106kg for 157p/kg from PF & PD Parsons.

A run of sows from the same home sold at 83p/kg for mixed weights (262kg – 308kg).

LAMBS (1006);
Another solid entry, but dip in overall quality forward with a shortage of meat on the day. Nevertheless, a number of good runs forward selling to a very fast trade, particularly for heavier sorts. Best forward selling to 274p/kg and plenty of the best at 260p/kg and better.

More heavy weights and best meated lambs could have been sold to vendor’s advantage. 48kg and above are in very good demand.

Overall average at 230p/kg looking very good on the show of lambs forward.

CULL SHEEP (401);
A strong entry and a solid trade, comprises well to reports of falling trade elsewhere.

Best Texel ewes to £210 from Callum Barks of Newcastle, and other best continentals at £160 plus.

Best Mules to £115/head and best Suffolk’s to £140/head.

A number of growing sorts forward with farmers choosing to prioritise the grass available, but a stronger demand for these generally.

Overall average at £83/head.

CALVES (197);

A big entry of calves and reared again and trade was better than expected under the current circumstances. The forthcoming winter coats are certainly weighing heavy on the rearers minds, and they are bidding accordingly.

41 Continental Bulls
Better sold than expected with stories elsewhere that there was nobody to buy them! The 10 best topped £300 with a smart Simmental heifer (23 days) from Robinson Partners, Rudyard selling to Yorkshire. 14 good mediums £250 – £285 range; smaller mediums £160 – £220 range, with 7 plainer or younger bulls under £100.

34 Continental Heifers
The best actually good to sell but the plainest heifers are hard work, except at a price. A tremendous Limousin (36 Days) heifer found plenty of suitors and sold at £370 for Messer’s Whittaker, Bosley. 6 best posh heifers £255 – £370 range; 3 more good calves at £200 plus; mediums generally £120 – £170 with 12 smaller under £100. No records broken but no disaster.

47 Natives
Always seem to have a premium at Leek.

41 Reared Claves
A big turnout that was not expected but all sold at prices in correlation to the quality of calf and standard that they had been reared.
AA Bulls (4 Mnths) to £230; Limousin Heifers (4Mnths) to £225; and AA Heifers (4 -5 Mnths) to £270.
