Market Report 7th June

A quiet Tuesday market following the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

Spring lambs sold on a fast trade with the best up to 399p/kg or £196.10/head with an average of 360p/kg overall. A few less hogget’s about with a top price of 307p/kg. Cull ewes in strong demand averaging at £117.35/head with the best to £184.

Dairies this week sold up to £2260 twice for heifers and a lovely trade in general.

Barren cows met a good enquiry seeing two at 200p/kg and topping at £1599 per head. Clean cattle sold up to 256p/kg.

Averages up in the pig shed this week with a strong demand received seeing the best up to 176p/kg for both cutters and bacon pigs.

Calves met a large gathering of buyers this week, and a fast trade throughout seeing the best bulls up to £415 and heifers to £328.

A good entry of barrens this week selling up to 200p/kg twice, for a 695kg Limousin from T B Thornley, Stanton and a 705kg Simmental from Home Farm. A 695kg Limousin at 197p/kg from T B Thornley and a 590kg Hereford realising 190p/kg for D & EA Jeffrey, Roston.

Overall average of 154.65p/kg or £1044.95 per head.

Top headage price of £1599 for a 975kg Holstein from DJ & KL Leadbetter, Sudbury and £1542.30 for a Holstein from the same home. Simmentals to £1410 and Limousin’s from £1390 and £1369.15.

CLEAN CATTLE (10);
Good to see more about this week with the best up to 256p/kg for a 635kg Limousin heifer from R P Hall, Swythamley who also sold a 540kg Limousin heifer for 254p/kg.

A 690kg Longhorn heifer realised 208p/kg for R W Potter & Co, Yeaveley.

A 720kg Angus steer sold for 220p/kg from Home Farm, Rushton Spencer.

HEIFERS TO £2260 X 2
Trade continues to remain solid for dairies with the entry on Tuesday selling extremely well.

Two heifers topped at £2260, the first from the Shepherd family of Bakewell and the second from John Stone of Onecote. Cows also from the Shepherds topped at £2120.

Trade was consistent throughout with the majority of the entry between £1700-£2000 with all milkers including a number with faults averaging £1790.

Some good prices received this Tuesday saw cutting pigs up to 176p/kg for a 78kg pig from Chris Hine, with 83kg and 79kg pigs at 169p/kg from J & B Fentem who sold others at 167p/kg and 164p/kg with Massie Farms selling cutters at 165p/kg three times and 164p/kg, 163p/kg.

Bacon pigs topped at 176p/kg for a 90kg pig from PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch, with a 94kg pig at 170p/kg for Chris Hine and a 96kg pig at the same price for J & B Fentem. The Parsons sold others at 166p/kg twice, 163p/kg and the Fentems at 158p/kg and 150p/kg twice.

Heavier pigs topped at 120p/kg for a pair of 130kg pigs from P W Hine, Meerbrook.
Sows topped at 110p/kg for a 203kg sow from RAO Johnson, Hilltop who also sold a 205kg sow for 100p/kg and a 223kg sow for 90p/kg. a 217kg sow realised 93p/kg for HM Carroll, Snelston and a 188kg sow a 74p/kg for R A Watson, Fenny Bentley.

A modest entry selling on a very good trade with many more able to be sold to the vendors advantage. Best lambs an exceptional trade topping at 399p/kg or £196.10/head and many more of the types are required every week.

BUTCHERS HOGGETS (73);
Numbers drying up very fast now but still a very good demand topping at 307p/kg for the best and plenty at 280p/kg and better. Overall average at 266p/kg. top headage of £188.94.

Still a good demand for fleshed hoggs – if you have some to sell get them in soon.

CULL SHEEP (108);
A very short entry in terms of numbers met a very firm trade and many more required! Orders were unable to be fulfilled today!

Best Texel’s to £184 but middle of the road ewes by far best to sell at £140 – £160. Mules to £138 and horned ewes to £84.

Overall average of £117.35.

A lighter entry after the long weekend with various problems regarding passports missing in the post. Possibly more buyers than calves this week with a very good trade for all.

23 Continental Bulls
A storming good trade with buyers looking for numbers. A superb 27 day old Simmental with shape won the day and sold at £415 with others from the same home at £350, £345, £332 (All 11-12 days). Mediums £240 – £300 with only a smaller one less.
