A low-key Christmas Show & Sale for 2020 due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, but a big thankyou to all our customers who supported the sale and provided some superb quality stock.
In the Cattle section, this years Champion was clinched by Wayne Smith & family of Basford with an outstanding 500kg Limousin heifer, which went on the sell for 560p/kg (£2800) to Mr Peter Lymer of J W Ash Butchers of Leek. The same family took home Reserve Champion with a 515kg Limousin heifer which realised 380p/kg and sold to Mr Ray Sargeant of TG Sargeant & Son of Bramshall. The cattle were kindly judged by Geoff Mycock of Buxton.
An excellent show of Lambs for the Show, kindly judged by Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats, the Champion Prize was given to a superb pen of five 45.8kg lambs from Roger & Simon Bailey of Cloudside. These sold for 680p/kg (£311/head) to Mr Peter Lymer of JW Ash Butchers of Leek.
A bumper entry of pigs and plenty of show worthy winners, judged by Steven Nield, the Champion pen was given to a pair of 95kg pigs from David Goldstraw of Meerbrook which sold for 180p/kg to Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats.
Away from the Christmas Show, the Dairy section saw an impressive trade once again, with heifers to £2300 and numerous others over £2000.
The Herd dispersal on behalf of the Shuker family of Whaley Bridge attracted a large interest selling up to £2240.
Great to see more calves about this Tuesday, and a large line up of purchasers for all types. Top price of £420 and £420 for Blue bull calves and heifers to £280.

Barrens saw an improved trade this Tuesday and some meated sorts forward topping at 162p/kg for a 525kg British Blue from Mitchell & Bradley, Siddington with a 665kg Dairy Shorthorn at 155p/kg for P & H Botham, Calton.
Limousin cows topped at 145p/kg for a 730kg cow with a 745kg Simmental at 140p/kg, and a 710kg Simmental cow at 139p/kg from the same home.
Black & white’s sold up to 120p/kg for a 770kg Holstein from PJ Davies, Werrington and also 120p/kg for a 985kg Holstein from SJ Biddulph, Hilderstone.

An excellent show of cattle for this years Christmas Primestock, kindly judged by Geoff Mycock of Buxton.
This years Champion & Small Holder Champion was awarded to a superb 500kg Limousin heifer shown by Wayne Smith & Family of Basford which sold for 560p/kg to gross £2,800 to regular purchaser & local butcher Peter Lymer of J W Ash Butchers, Leek.
Reserve Champion was also won by Wayne Smith & Family with a 515kg Limousin heifer which sold for 380p/kg to gross £1957 sold to Ray Sargeant of T G Sargeant & Son of Bramshall.
The winner of the heifer class, being a 510kg Limousin heifer shown by Robert Belfield & family of Upper Hulme sold for 285p/kg to Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats, who also purchased a second heifer from Robert Belfield being a 525kg Limousin realising 225p/kg.
The winner of the steer class was an excellent 625kg British Blue steer from DE & GM Storer, Wincle which went on the sell for 285p/kg to Robert Bowring of Mansfield. A 600kg Piedmontese steer from Wayne Smith realised 245p/kg.
Two British Blue cattle from Eric Lane of Upper Hulme sold for 238p/kg for a 580kg Heifer and 220p/kg for a 715kg British Blue steer.
A 545kg Longhorn heifer shown by Wayne Smith sold for 225p/kg.

Another very successful day in the dairy ring at Leek with 189 Head sold of which 168 were milkers.
Trade continues to hold with a lovely heifer from Malcolm Trevor-Jones topping the day at £2300 with others from the same home at £2020 and £1940.
Regular vendor Andrew Mills topped with his 3 heifers at £2180 to average £2013.
Two milky cows from the Johnson family of Longnor reached £2140 and £2010.
Friesians continue to sell well at Leek with a second calver from the Seabridge family of Sandon at £1830 and a heifer from the Lomas family of the Griffe at £1700.
The herd of cows form the Shuker family of Whaley Bridge met a swift trade with the second animal through the ring reaching £2070. Trade topped at £2240 with numerous others in that £1700-£2000 bracket.

The Christmas Show & Sale of pigs kindly judged by regular purchaser Steven Nield who gave the Champion award to a pair of 95kg pigs from David Goldstraw of Meerbrook which sold for 180p/kg to Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats.
Trade was constant throughout with pork pigs selling up to 128p/kg for a pair of 75kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who also sold a 68kg pig at 122p/kg and a 74kg pig at 112p/kg for J R Mosedale & Son, Longford.
Cutting pigs sold to 138p/kg for 84kg pigs from Bernard Minshull, who also sold 85kg pigs at 136p/kg and 85kg pigs at 123p/kg. J & B Fentem sold cutters at 134p/kg for 82kg pigs, 126p/kg for 76kg pigs and 77kg pigs at 125p/kg.
Bacon pigs sold up to 180p/kg for an excellent pair of 95kg pigs from David Goldstraw, Meerbrook, with others at 158p/kg for a 100kg pigs from Bernard Minshull, who also sold bacon pigs at 146p/kg, 142p/kg, 140p/kg and 138p/kg. The Parson family sold 94kg pigs at 142p/kg and J & B Fentem has bacon pigs at 140p/kg.
A bumper entry of heavy pigs this Tuesday topping at 200p/kg for 111kg pigs from David Goldstraw who sold a further pen of 107kg pigs for 180p/kg, and the Parson family of Whitchurch selling an excellent run of pigs at 162p/kg, 148p/kg, 142p/kg, 134p/kg and 128p/kg.
Cull sows sold on a solid trade up to 75p/kg for a 340kg sow from R Rowlinson, Ramshorn, who sold another 286kg sow for 68p/kg. MC & EA Beattie sold a 310kg sow for 73p/kg, with the Fentem family selling a 275kg sow for 70p/kg and a 218kg sow for 65p/kg.

A reasonable entry but many more could be sold every week.
The sale today incorporated a toned-down version of the usual Christmas Show & Sale, however quality and trade was certainly not toned down and an excellent trade followed.
The judging was undertaken by Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats, who hose a pen of five from Roger & Simon Bailey which went on to sell for £6.80/kg (£311/head), being purchased by Peter Lymer of J W Ash Butchers of Leek.
Away from the show, trade was very brisk for the best sorts, regardless of wight.
An exceptionally firm enquiry also for lightweight lambs 30 – 37kg of all breeds and types. These look in short supply nationally and if they
have a touch of meat are 210p/kg and above.
