Market Report Monday 30th December

The Monday afternoon Market proved to be successful with a good turnout of vendors and buyers alike.

A strong entry of Lambs forward, with 1,000 head on offer, reaching a high of 370p/kg and a top headage price of £191.16.

356 Ewes on offer, reaching a high of £222 and Tups topping at £246.

Less Calves on offer at the Monday sale but a good trade non the less with a British Blue Bull topping the day at £400 and a British Blue Heifer to £330 with many customers going home empty handed.

Less Pigs around, as expected for the afternoon sale but a top price of 231p for fat pigs was achieved.

Less pigs about, as expected given the abnormal sale date and time. Trade on the whole very solid. Top price for fat pigs 231p and sows to 115p

Porkers sold to 178p for Sam Harper.

Cutters sold to 212p for J&B Fentem, who had others at 184p.

Baconers dominated the entry selling to 231p for Massie farms who had others to 230p x2 and 229p. PF + PD Parsons to 229p, 222p 195p. J&B Fentem to 225p , 224p, 220p. B Minshull to 222p. C Hine to 212p

Heavies sold to 200p, 190p & 175p for J&B Fentem. 182p for PF+PD Parsons. 125kg pigs from B Wain sold to 160p and 186kg gilt from Rosie Watson sold to 148p or £275.28

Sows sold to 115p or £414 for Rosie Watson, C Hine to 96p or £259. Feeding sows to 30p.

The Monday afternoon sale proving to be a successful operation, with excellent numbers forward and a strong trade throughout.

Best Lambs regularly at 350p and better, to a top of 370p/kg and best big lambs to £191.16. Heavy lambs (45kg and above) averaged £160/head!!

Commercial quality lambs were well bid for at 310-330p generally, depending on finish and breed.

Overall average at 325p/kg which includes some very poor store type lambs in the entry.

CULL EWES (356)
A fantastic show of ewes given the abnormal sale date and evening sale time. Trade on the whole very similar to previous weeks with good runs of well-fed ewes selling to a fast trade, more mules and hill types also forward today looking well sold on the day.

Top price £246 for a Rouge tup from the Redfern Family. Ewes topped at £222 for a pen from Roger Bailey, A Willaims to £210 & £190, DJ Willaims to £200 & £190 and Rob Machin to £180 & £175

A smaller entry as expected for the Monday afternoon market at Leek, but a buoyant trade still topping at £400 for a British Blue bull, with a British Blue heifer to £330. A great number of buyers in attendance with many going home empty handed, overall average of £254.
