Market Report Tuesday 10th January

A very wet Tuesday market and a few less numbers about. A good demand for barren cattle with top prices of 189p/kg and £1483.65 per head.

A lovely show of milkers and selling well, up to £2300 for a third calver and heifers to £2280.

Less sheep about this week and prices back on the week. Top prices of 261p/kg and £126.54 a head, with an SQQ average of 225.44p/kg. Ewes up to £149.

A strong entry of pigs, seeing another good enquiry selling up to 197p/kg for bacon pigs and 192p/kg for cutters.

Not enough calves for the demand and best calves to £365 for a Limousin bull calf and £308 for a lovely British Blue heifer calf.

A strong trade for the cattle on offer, topping the day at 189p/kg for a 785kg Beef Shorthorn from P & R Griffin, Butterton, who sold another 675kg Beef Shorthorn for 184p/kg.

Black & white’s sold to 184p/kg for a 630kg Friesian from J & L Macpherson Ltd, Yoxall and a 780kg Norwegian Red at 175p/kg from G P Broadsmith & Son, Lymm.

Top headage price of £1483.65 for Beef Shorthorns with another at £1242. Norwegian Red to £1365, Fleckvieh to £1267.50 and Friesians to £1245.75.

Two black & white bulls sold for 215p/kg for a 510kg Friesian bull and 205p/kg for a 615kg Friesian bull, both from J E Archer & Sons Ltd, Hilton.

Numerous buyers in attendance with many going home empty handed.

Top price went to the Phillips family of Winkhill at £2300 for a third calver giving 39kg. close behind at £2280 was a fresh heifer from Bradbury & Brookes of Field.

A 31kg heifer from the Ellis’s of Ashover made £2220 with another sweet heifer from Andy Ball of Sandbach reaching £2120.

50 already entered for the Pedigree sale next week with more expected. Catalogues will be out shortly.

A few more pigs this week with trade a fraction less than last week, but none the less still a very good trade especially for those best pigs. Top price 197p/kg twice for a pen of 96kg gilts from Massie Farms, Stafford & a 95kg pig from J&B Fentem Allsop En-Le Dale.

Porkers less in numbers this week with only 8 on offer, top price 176p/kg for 75kg pigs from A Worth, Marton who has another 67kg pig realise 166p/kg. P J Barker, Charnwood saw 166p/kg for 64kg pigs.

Cutting Pigs topped at 192p/kg for an 84kg pig from J&B Fentem, who had others to 181p/kg and 169p/kg. Other top prices for 82kg pigs from J Ball, Betchon realising 188p/kg. A Worth Marton had a pen of 85kg pigs to 185p/kg

Bacon Pigs were once again a very good trade nothing over 200p/kg but several pens above 190p/kg. Top price 197p/kg twice for a pen of 96kg gilts from Massie Farms, who had others to 196p/kg & 195p/kgx3, Stafford. J&B Fentem Allsop En-Le Dale also saw 197p/kg for a 95kg pig. Other top prices include 196p/kg for a 90kg pig from S Bailey, Knypersley and PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch, had a 86kg to 196p/kg & 93kg pigs to 195p/kg.

Sows were met with a strong demand again top price 89p/kg for a 235kg sow from JA&B Minshull, Buxton. R Rowlinson, Ramshorn had a 242kg sow to 74p/kg and C Hine, Biddulph had a 259kg sow to 71p/kg.

As dear as we have had them for a long time. Double the number could have been sold today. A posh British Blue for Messrs Handford, Aspenshaw sold at £308 with 3 others over £280. Mediums ‘Trade of the Day’ at £180 – £230 with just 7 smalls under £150.
