Market Report Tuesday 10th September

The rain didn’t deter trade in Leek on Tuesday, seeing 1,382 head of sheep on offer producing a top price of 346p/kg for best lambs and a top of £203/head for Ewes.

A British Blue bull topped the calf section at £400 with a British Blue also topping the heifers at £288.

Dairies sold up to £2500 for a second calver, the pedigree sale is next week followed by a special sale of 174 Holstein Friesians, see advert below.

Barrens sold on a firm trade with a top price of 225p/kg for a Friesian and clean cattle up to 260p/kg.

BARREN COWS (33)
Selling time – 10:00am

Another firm trade with a good company of buyers. Top price was 225p/kg for a 585kg Friesian cow from WSW Mills of Leicestershire and a 555kg British Blue from G Baskerville selling to 219p/kg.
A 645kg Holstein cow, again for WSW Mills, achieved 186p/kg.
A 765kg Holstein cow for WE Turnock & Sons was well sold at 186p/kg.
An 870kg Holstein, from WG & J Clark of Bradnop sold to 175p/kg.
A non-Farm Assured 860kg Shorthorn cow, from GG Hall & Son of Croxden, sold for 168p/kg with an 845kg Shorthorn, from the same vendor achieving 169p/kg.
Another 825kg Holstein, from SJ Hooley of Macclesfield, sold to 166p/kg.

Top headage price was £1522.50 and £1422.90 for Holsteins and Shorthorns up to £1444.80 and £1428.05.

CLEAN CATTLE
A small entry, seeing a 560kg British Blue Steer for TJ Partington at 260p/kg to gross £1456.00 and another 560kg Steer from the same vendor achieved 249p/kg.
British Blue heifers, from G Baskerville & Co, at 535kg achieved 232p/kg.

A few less pigs in with quality less on the day as well, trade would be 5p less on the week. Fat pigs topped at 212p and sows to 100p.
Porkers topped at 194p for J&B Fentem, Sam Harper to 180p, 170p. M Halliday to 172p.
Cutting pigs to 205p for J&B Fentem, others to 195p. PF+PD Parsons to 190p.
Bacon pigs to 212p for S Bailey. Massie Farms to 210p, 209p x2 & 208p. J&B Fentem to 209p, PF+PD Parsons to 207p, 206, 205p.
Heavies to 170p from G Tomlinson 170p.
Sows to 100p from RA Hughes, C Price to 80, 68p, 50p.

DAIRIES TO £2500

Another buoyant trade for milkers saw regular vendors Mick and Kay Hulse of Consall top the market for a very pretty second calver giving 37kg at £2500.
Close behind at £2440 was a 25kg heifer from Edward and Diane Bennett of Whiston.

First time vendors Messrs Venables of Siddington saw all of their three heifers pass the £2000 mark making £2080 x2 and £2160 respectively.

A good number forward with again, a high proportion of lambs lacking the required weight and finish.
Best lambs very well bid for to a top of 346p/kg, best heavy lambs to £179.14.
Overall average at 275p/kg, impacted by the number of lean lambs forward.

A good entry of ewes forward trade up on the week on the whole with better sorts forward, still a good number of hill types and feeding ewes in the mix. Ewes topped at £203 for J&JA Venables, Lower Whithigton, who had others to £199, £196 and £185. H Simmons to £180.

A smart entry once again with the best as good as ever to sell but the mediums very dear by comparison.

Very few real best calves on offer but these sold easily past £350 to a high of £400 for a British Blue from Andy Williamson. Mediums £240-£340, depending on shape and age with smaller bulls under £200, (only six today).
