Market Report Tuesday 14th January

An unbelievable trade in the calf section today with a stunning Simmental bull reaching £470 and a lovely British Blue heifer topping at £392.

836 lambs on offer, selling on a good trade to a top of 372p/kg with a top headage price of just over £200.

211 Ewes on offer with the best topping at £230/head and Tups up to a very pleasing £251/head.

Barrens on a solid trade with a top price of 218p/kg
For a Dairy Shorthorn and a top headage price on the day of £1603.80.

A few less pigs than last week, seeing a top price of 200p/kg for fats.

A swift trade for a mixed entry in the Dairies seeing a top price of £2180 for a second calver.

A very firm trade with strong competition on all lots, seeing a top price of 218p/kg for a 600kg Dairy Shorthorn from Peter Gilman with a 745kg Blonde cow, from CW Prime of Dilhorne achieving 215p/kg and an 810kg Hereford, from the same vendor, at 198p/kg.

An Aberdeen Angus from Mark Jenks of Balterley, sold to 193p/kg at a weight of 665kg with a 650kg Hereford being particularly well sold at 191p/kg from Chris Gabbott & family of Rainow.

Black and White cows, from Pete Gilman topped at 180p/kg at 770kg and others at 179p/kg weighing 605kg from Pearson & Son of Macclesfield.

Top headage price of the day was £1603.80 and £1601.75 to average £1070.17 including a number of small leaner cows.

CLEAN CATTLE
An increased trade for young bulls, seeing a top price this week of 265p/kg at 555kg for a Friesian from JE Archer & Sons with others at 264p/kg and 263p/kg for similar bulls from the same vendor.

A plain Holstein heifer weighing 460kg was well sold at 205p/kg.

Top headage price was £1470.75 for a Friesian bull with others at £1412.40.

A few less pigs about, trade on the whole was solid. Top price 200p/kg for fats from J Ball, Sandbach. Sows to 65p for Marsden & Paddock.

Porkers sold to 174p for A Shinton.

Cutters sold to 190p J&B Minshull, with others to 170p. A Shinton to 188p and 175p. PF+PD Parsons to 180p.

Bacon pigs sold to 200p for J Ball, Sandbach. PF+PD Parsons sold to 197p, 196p. J&B Fentem to 194px2, 192p, 190px2. C Hine to 187p & 185p. M Banahm to 185p & 184p.

Heavies sold to 190p for C Hine. A Shinton to 183p. M R Banham 170p x2. J&B Fentem to 162p. R Brough, 162p, 160p, 142p. Chatsworth Farms to 118p or £219.48 for a 186kg gilt.

Sows 65p for Marsden and Paddock, SJ Branson to 60p, 55p, 51p x2.

A mixed quality forward on Tuesday, however, trade was swift for all categories.

Topping the day was Mick and Kay Hulse for a fresh second calver giving 34kg at £2180. Messrs Phillips of Winkhill saw their 26kg heifer reach £1980.

British Friesian heifers from Martin Riley of Longnor reached £1900.

A good entry forward for next weeks Pedigree Sale with 50 milkers already entered. Catalogues will be out shortly.

A good entry sold on a solid trade with competitive bidding throughout. Best lambs to a top of 372p/kg and regularly 340p-360p for the best finished lambs.

Heavy lambs adding up well again with the best just over £200 and plenty at £180 and better.

Overall average at 333p/kg or £149.76/head.

Unbelievable trade today with calves miles dearer on the week as the finished beef trade has its effect on the calves.

Great to sell with not so many best bulls about and a lot of second quality rearers about with some looking £100 more on the week. Five best topped £390 and up to a surreal £470 for a well-shaped Simmental from Angela Bailey, Brown Edge. Mediums £290-£350 looking very dear today with a few smaller bulls under £260.
