Christmas Pedigree Show and Sale in the Dairy shed this week with the top price of £3950

Still strong numbers in the calf ring with 171 on offer, topping at £725 for a British Blue bull and Blue’s also topping the heifers at £525

Lambs selling on a strong trade, topping at 410p/kg or £219.24/head and ewes topping at £240/head

Barrens to 247p/kg or £1931.55/head with clean to 320p/kg or £1856/head

Another good show of pigs, topping at 249p/kg or £240.53/head

A solid entry in the barrens this week with the top price being 247p/kg for a British Blue cow weighing 730kg to gross £1803.10 for B & BM Rowlinson of Bottomhouse.

A Montbeliarde cow weighing 700kg sold to 246p/kg to gross £1722 for SC, FE & JA Harvey of Waterfall who had a second Monbeliarde weighing 595kg to 245p/kg, grossing at £1457.75.

A small entry of clean cattle on offer today with Hereford steers topping at 320p/kg, weighing 580kg and grossing £1856 for Roy Sant of Endon.

Overall average was 314.54p/kg.

Another large show of pigs and a stand on trade from last week for the best pigs, the quality on the whole would not just be as good as last week but lesser sorts looking well sold, lighter types less than 75kg at a reduced rate with outlets wanting them heavier. Gilts generally 210-230p and boars 170-190p top price 249p or £240.53.

Porkers sold to 202p for PF+PD Parsons. Distance travellers LR Jones, Conwy sold to 173p.

Cutters sold to 211p for PJ Saunders who had boars to 178p. J&B Fentem to 210p and boars to 185p. PF+PD Parsons 205px2. LR Jones to 197p, 196p.

Bacon Pigs sold to 249 for Massie Farms who had others to 240p x2, 239p, 233p, 230p, 229p. SL Seabridge sold to 234p, MR Banahm sold to 233p 230p. J&B Fentem sold to 232p, 218p, 213p, DB Goldstraw sold to 220p. PF+PD Parsons sold to 217p, S Bailey to 217p.

Heavies sold to 181p for 117kg hoggs from MR Banahm, C Hine to 174p for boars.

Sows sold to 72p for A Riley who had another at 52p. Anything out of spec 20p.

Leek Christmas Show & Sale to £3950

The drop in milk price is finally taking a hit on dairy prices nationally however despite this trade still topped at £3950 at the Christmas Show and Sale at Leek.

Meldamar Milano Ruth 196 from the Shepherd family of Bakewell showed great presence in the ring. Sold giving 35kg she was clinched by Andrew Hulme of Leek. The Shepherd family also went on to take the Show Champion with their third calver which was eventually sold for £2750. Reserve Champion was the second placed cow from the Braemarhouse Herd of Messrs Mellor. She made £2500.

Hot in pursuit at £3920 was Tissington Adorable Periwinkle 3 from the Stubbs family of Tissington. By Stantons Adorable, she was giving 37kg and went to the Torr family also of Tissington. They bought a second from the same home at £2900. The Stubbs third heifer also by Adorable made £3650 to A Hulme.

The Weston family of Roston saw their Bomaz Monument daughter reach £3020.

LAMBS (701)
A reasonable entry sold on a very good trade with best shaped lambs very keenly bid for.

Best sorts flew away to a top of 410p/kg and overweights sold to 406p/kg or £219.24. Plenty of the best shaped lambs 360p – 385p/kg.

A lot of weathered lambs in the entry, selling well but at lower rates, generally 300p – 330p/kg, depending on finfish. 46kg – 48kg hardest to sell on the day with heavyweights and handy weights both good to sell.

SQQ average at 336p/kg and 329p/kg overall. Overall average at £151.25/head.

Trade remarkable again with all shapes and sizes represented with a few stronger calves in the entry today. Richard Emmott had the pick of the entry today with his three tremendous British Blue bulls selling at £725, £700 and £695 with Mark Hodgkinson also selling a British Blue at £700. Top ten British Blues all over £620, medium bulls £390 – £500 with smaller types under £350.
