Market Report Tuesday 16th May

Another busy Tuesday at Leek with a full sheep shed and the monthly Pedigree Dairy Sale.

Trade remains strong in the sheep sections, seeing more spring lambs forward, and selling up to 400p/kg or £173.88 per head. Plenty of hoggs still coming forward, and the best to 336p/kg and £181.57. Ewes selling very well once again, and the best to £192.

Dairies sold on a mixed enquiry, with quality selling very well, but other qualities difficult to place. Best heifers sold up to £2320 and cows to £2180.

Pigs an excellent trade once again with 131 sold topping at 220p/kg twice. More of those best white pigs required each week.

A shortage of barrens and more required each week! Strong prices were received with the best to 208p/kg.

More calves about this week, met a ring full of buyers after stock, seeing bulls to £450 and heifers to £335.

A similar trade to last week and lack of numbers for the demand on offer!! Top price of 208p/kg twice for a 560kg Friesian from DR & A Shuker & Sons, and also for a 820kg Simmental from Bottom Lane Farm, Ipstones.

A 570kg Montbeliarde realised 197p/kg for SC, FE & JA Harvey, Waterfall, who also sold a 690kg Monty for 189p/kg.

A 620kg British Blue sold for 196p/kg from G R Weston, Longsdon, and a 475kg Limousin from S Kidd Farmers, Longnor realised 194p/kg, who also sold a 545kg Blue for 188p/kg. A 690kg Hereford sold for 192p/kg from J Salmon, Werrington.

Overall average of 175.61p/kg or £1104.81 per head.

Top headage price of £1705.60 for Simmentals, Herefords to £1324.80, Montbeliarde’s to £1304.10 and Ayrshires to £1267.25.

Two OTM bulls forward this week with a 1110kg Charolais selling for 163p/kg (£1809.30) from C & EJ Whilock, Werrington and a 675kg Dexter sold for 125p/kg (£843.75) from S J Booth, Lymm.

Clean Cattle;
Just one today being a 540kg Hereford heifer selling at 234p/kg from B E Wain, Siddington.

Once again trade remains on fire at Leek with fats topping at 220p/kg twice Averages looking incredibly healthy over 200p/kg for those prime pigs.

Fat Pigs
Porkers topped at 220p/kg from JA & B Minshull, Buxton for a 65kg pig. Others to 203p/kg from R Watson, Frodsham, who had others to 190p/kg.

Cutters were very much in demand topping at 215p/kg x3 from J&B Fentem for 85kg pigs, others from the same home realised 213p/kg & 210p/kg. PF&PD Parsons, Whitchurch also saw 215p/kg for 85 pigs.

Baconers topped at 220p/kg from DB Goldstraw, Meerbrook for 101kg pigs. S Bailey Knypersley saw 218p/kg for 89kg pigs, Massie Farms, Stafford had a run to 217p/kg for 94kg pigs others to 215p/kg x3, 214p/kg x2 and 212p/kg. MC&E Beattie, Allstock Saw 216p/kg for 100kg pigs.

Heavies topped at 193p/kg for a 110kg boar from DB Goldstraw. PF&PD Parsons saw 189p/kg for a 122kg pig. J&B Minshull had a 106kg pig to 181p/kg. Native bred Hampshire x pigs to 140p/kg for 136kg and 105kg pigs from R Watson, Frodsham.

A funny trade for milkers at the May pedigree sale, no doubt not helped by the good silaging weather.

Top call for black & white’s was £2320 for a Batman daughter from the Shepherd family of Bakewell, giving 32kg she went to Andrew Neville of Matlock. Another Batman daughter from the same home reached £2280 to Messrs Howell of Yarlet.

Andrew Stone, Onecote saw his Bidlea Isaac daughter reach £2240 to Messrs Sellors of Grangemill.

Cows peaked at £2180 for a second calver from the Needham family of Rushton.

In-calf heifer from Richard Lomas of Calow reached £1620 with calves topping at £290.

The special entry of Shorthorns were very well received with a heifer from Messrs Hole of Ashover topping at £2300 to Messrs Malkin of Stone. Cows topped at £1820 for a third calver from Richard Harper. Several commercial shorthorn heifers from the Hollinworth family of Ashover topped at £1110.

Youngstock from the Bailey family of Oswestry sold particularly well with a September born heifer by Tanat Valleyrun making £640 with others to £620 and £600.

An increasing entry seeing another solid trade for all types on offer. Best lambs to 400p from Ian Wilson and family and also B Butterworth & Son. Best lambs generally 370p and above and a number of big lambs grossing £150 plus, topping at £173.88 from John & Gary Fryer, Horton.

Overall average at 358p/kg.

Numbers keep coming, and trade keeps strong for the well fed types, although not at the heights of recent weeks, in line with expectations. It is noted however an increasing proportion of the entry are ‘tail end types’ as to be expected.
Best sorts at 320p plus to a top of 336p/kg and £181.57 in the lump.

Overall average at 282p/kg, represents the quality more than the demand.

A surprisingly large entry with vendors clearly taking advantage of being able to leave the farm after lambing etc. Best ewes well bid for at £192 and plenty at £170 plus. Best Mules to £130.

Better numbers and trade remains incredible with numerous spring purchasers around the ring and looking for numbers.

47 Continental Bulls
Wow, what a trade with claves looking well sold all day although a number of smaller Blues (whilst looking well sold) did nothing to enhance the average. 11 best bulls topped £330 with Simmentals at the top and a stunner from Angela Bailey at £450 and Andrew Huxley at £445, both selling to different Yorkshire buyers. Medium bulls £260 – £320 with a number of smaller calves, mostly blues £110 – £190.
