Market Report Tuesday 17th September

Late winter sun for Leek on Tuesday, a huge contrast to the rain we had last week!

The Dairy shed was in full swing with 211 cattle on offer with the monthly pedigree sale and the dispersal sale for Mr Wrench. A top price of £2920 was achieved in the pedigree sale with the herd dispersal reaching a top of £2220.

142 Calves on offer with a British Blue bull topping at £440 and a Limousin heifer to £340.

A good entry of pigs forward with 116 on offer to a top of 215p/kg.

Barrens to a top price of 215p/kg for a Limousin and clean cattle topping at 245p/kg

BARREN COWS (24)

Selling time – 10:00am

A similar trade with vendors being well pleased and seeing a top price of 215p/kg for a 560kg Limousin for G Baskerville & Co with a 765kg Simmental at 199p/kg, a 760kg Shorthorn for PR Griffin at 197p/kg and an 835kg Simmental at 185p/kg.

Four 555kg Charolais, for C & EJ Whilock were bid for keenly to 180p/kg, a 625kg Montbeliarde, for N E Goodwin & Son at 175p/kg and a 745kg Holstein for WE Turnock & Sons at 174p/kg.

Top headage price was £1544.75 and £1522.35 for Simmental with Shorthorn to £1497.20.

 

CLEAN CATTLE (11)

Plenty of competition with no well finished cattle on offer but all cattle were well sold.

Top price was 245p/kg for a 585kg British Blue steer from T J Partington of Burton on Trent with another 560kg British Blue, from the same vendor at 240p/kg.

A 545kg Limousin steer from G Baskerville & Co exchanged hands for 235p/kg and a 540kg Aberdeen Angus heifer, from the same vendor, made 220p/kg.

Top headage price was £1433.25 for steers and £1188.00 for heifers.

A good entry forward today with trade the same as last week for those best white pigs, a few overweights and coloured pigs today, which are harder to place. Best gilts 200p+ Best boars 190p+

Top price for fat pigs 215p and sows to 110p.

Porkers sold to 160p for MR Banham and C Price sold Coloured pigs to 100p.

Cutters sold to 215p from J Ball, Sandbach. PF+PD Parsosn to 208p. J&B Fentem to 204p, 203p, 202p x2. JA&B Minshull to 197p for Boars.

Bacon pigs sold to 210p for PF+PD Parsons x2. who had others to 209p. S Bailey to 209p. Massie farms to

208p, 207p, 205p & 204p. J&B Fentem, to 206p and B Minsull to 204p for Boars.

Heavies topped at 190p for Becky Palfryman, PF+Pd Parsosn to 182p MR Banham to 178p and 170p.

Sows sold to 110p for J&B Fentem. A worth to 96p and 56p.

TOP OF £2920

HERD TO £2220

A very busy day in the dairy shed at Leek on Tuesday saw 211 pass through the ring with trade solid from start to finish.

A quality entry in the Pedigree Sale saw a lovely Pellegrino daughter from the Weston family top at £2920 to Andrew Hulme of Basford. Close behind at £2820 was a Hartford Rubi-Taz heifer from Michael Stubbs at Tissington.

David Brailsford of Chesterfield saw his Mr Rubicon Dynamo daughter make £2760 also to Andrew Hulme.

The Mellor family of Earl Sterndale had a lovely run of heifers in that topped at £2740 with others to £2600, £2560 and £2520.

Cows peaked at £2340 for a second calver from the Easom family. The entire entry averaged an excellent £2171.

A good crowd gathered for the dispersal sale of the grazing herd on behalf of David Wrench of Marton. Numerous hit the £1900 plus mark to average a solid £1525.

LAMBS (1085)

A good entry met a similar trade but leaner store type lambs impacting on the average.

Best sorts topping at 340p/kg and generally the best shaped, well finished lambe at 3009/kg and above.

Best heavy lambs grossing at £172/head and more could be sold to vendor’s advantage.

Overall average at 273p/kg for a mixed entry.

Less ewes than last week trade on the whole is a little more sparky. A large proportion of the ewes forward are grazing ewes, lacking those meated continental ewes today. Top price £182 for R&S Bailey.

142 calves plus 4 weanlings on offer in the Calf section, a British Blue Bull topped the day at £440 with a Limousin topping the heifers at £340. New and seasoned buyers around the ring again today.

Fifteen biggest over £340 including six over £400 to a peak of £440 for a British Blue bull for PJ Davies of Werrington. Mediums £330 – £280 with smalls under £250.
