Market Report Tuesday 1st November

A showery day following the torrential downpours from the Halloween weekend, and good entries in all sections. Trade much stronger on the week for lambs, seeing prices 10 pence ahead of last week and selling up to 268p/kg or £142.20. Cull ewes a better trade selling to £174 for rams and ewes to £162.

More barren cattle this week, selling up to 175p/kg and £1531.25 a head, and clean up to 232p/kg.

Dairies sold up to £2140 twice for heifers, and youngstock to £600.

Less pigs in this week, saw a slight drop in trade, seeing a top price of 170p/kg and £161.70.

A bumper entry of calves and short on best quality types but plenty of buyers for all, saw bulls to £410 and heifers to £185.

A larger entry sold on a good trade, selling up to 175p/kg for a 875kg British Blue from B E Wain, Siddington, with black & white’s up to 160p/kg for a 640kg Holstein from A Povey & sons, Doveridge and a 620kg Friesian realised 158p/kg for Foker Grange Farm.

Top headage price of £1531.25 for the British Blue from B E Wain, with Simmentals to £1474.40, Herefords to £1140.05, £1140 & £1060.80 and Friesians to £1060.80, Holsteins to £1058.20 & £1030.40.

A OTM Limousin steer weighing 690kg realised 215p/kg for Home Farm, Rushton Spencer, and a 500kg Hereford bull sold for 156p/kg from G Millington, Wincle.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A few more about this week, and a good trade for the quality on offer saw heifers up to 232p/kg for a 460kg Hereford from R P Hall, Heaton who also sold a 510kg Hereford for 230p/kg. Other Hereford heifers sold to 188p/kg for a 475kg heifer from D Wilson and 183p/kg for a 535kg Hereford heifer from Roy Sant, Longsdon.

Black & white bulls sold well, up to 209p/kg twice for 630kg and 615kg Friesians from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

A 710kg Holstein steer sold for 185p/kg from Home Farm, Rushton who also sold a 600kg Simmental for 172p/kg.

Purchasers were much more cautious on Tuesday perhaps tempered by the recent torrential rain which means winter housing is undoubtably imminent.

Top price went to the Ball family of Sandbach whose two heifers reached £2140 & £2100. Andy and Jane Brookes of Field also saw their stylish heifer reach £2140.

Youngstock from the Gleaves of Sproston sold well to £600.

A few less pigs this week, and prices less on the week. Cutters sold to 159p/kg twice for 78kg and 80kg pigs from J & B Fentem, Alsop en le Dale who also sold others 157p/kg, 156p/kg, 147p/kg twice and 145p/kg. 150p/kg for a 80kg pig from S Bailey.

Bacon pigs sold to 170p/kg for a 86kg pig from S Bailey who also sold a 86kg pig at 166p/kg. Massie Farms sold bacon pigs up to 166p/kg who had others at 162p/kg three times, 161p/kg and 160p/kg. 164p/kg for a 104kg from PF & PD Parsons, and 160p/kg for a pair from P J Bowers, Mow Cop.

A 105kg pig sold for 154p/kg from PF & PD Parsons and 112p/kg for a 112kg from the same home.

Cull sows sold up to 73p/kg for a run of five from S Richardson, Barnsley and 70p/kg for a 208kg sow from JW & B Bennett, and 68p/kg for 620kg from Nathan Gabbott.

LAMBS (653);
An entry short of requirements sold on a very sharp trade for all types and weights. Many more could have been sold to the vendors advantage.

A number of lambs short of meat but they also saw a light in trade and very little below 220p/kg.

Big lambs selling well again, with heavies to 253p/kg or £142.20 in the lump.

Overall average of 237p/kg. More lambs required each week!

CULL SHEEP (323);
A similar entry and the sharpest trade seen for some weeks. Best Rams sold to £174 from Messrs Burgess of Heaton and best ewes to £162 from Fred Yates, Longford. Closely followed at £160 for R & S Bailey.

Second quality ewes saw the biggest lift on the week with some up by £10 – £15/head.

Overall average at £88 for an entry dominated by Mules.

Back came the numbers in force with it a packed ring of 29 different buyers all looking for calves but at value prices. The ongoing feed and energy costs are clearly playing on everybody’s minds.

60 Continental Bulls
Good numbers and plenty of cautious buyers at ringside. Best as always good to sell with 2 Charolais at the top of the best. One 36 day old bull from S Kidd Farmers made £410 and a 22 day old bull from Daz Tudor made £375. 10 best bulls topped £250; mediums £140 – £240 with smaller calves £90 – £120 and some plainer sorts under £70.
