Market Report Tuesday 22nd November

A strong number of lambs and cull sheep forward this Tuesday saw a lift in trade to last week, with the average 10 pence. Leading prices of 277p/kg and £146.99 per head. Culls were a strong trade, seeing a top price of £159 and average of £92.43/head overall.

A nice show of dairies forward following last weeks bumper entry, seeing heifers to £2160 & £2140, and cows to £2000.

Barren cows were a little less this week but still in good demand, selling up to 177p/kg and £1358.80.

An improved trade in the pig section this week saw leading prices over £2 to top at 203p/kg!

Strong calves are still a excellent trade, but lesser quality harder to place this week. Leading prices of £375 for Blue bulls and Blue heifers to £275.

A mixed entry and some good prices achieved, albeit a little less to what we have been used to. Top price of 177p/kg for a 500kg Hereford from T J Fox, Hurdlow and 161p/kg twice, for a 685kg Blonde from C H Ede & Son, Alkmonton and a 655kg Angus from T J Fox.

A 780kg Hereford realised 159p/kg from S Kidd Farmers, Longnor and 158p/kg for a 860kg Angus from J C Robinson, Rushton who also sold a 780kg Angus at 157p/kg from the same home.

Overall average of 129.37p/kg or £804.80.
Top headage price of £1358.80 for the Angus from J C Robinson, who also had another at £1224.60. Herefords to £1240.20 and Friesians to £1110.

CLEAN CATTLE;
Selling time – Following the Barren Cattle

A small entry sold up to 220p/kg for a 545kg Blonde heifer from C H Ede & Son, Alkmonton.

Friesian bulls sold well, up to 200p/kg for a 550kg bull and 199p/kg for a 615kg bull, both from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

A really bouncy trade on Tuesday saw a 28kg heifer from Andrew Mills of Ratcliffe on Wreake top the day at £2160 to Mr Robinson of Rudyard. He has a second at £2140 to Messrs Parkes of Melton Mowbray.

Cows topped at £2000 for a second calver from Bradbury & Brookes of Field.

A sweet Shorthorn second calver from the Howes of Litton reached £1900.

A few more pigs this week with trade improved on the week, heavy pigs in strong demand. Trade topped at 203p/kg for D Goldstraw Meerbrook who saw others to 199p/kg and 197p/kg.

Porkers a similar trade to previous weeks averaging 137.76p/kg, top price from J&B Fentem, Allsop En-Le Dale with a 75kg gilt to 174p/kg. Other top prices included 164p/kg for 65kg pigs from P J Barker, Charnwood, with a 68kg pig from the same home selling to 160p/kg. M Yardley, Gnosall saw pigs to 158pkg for 71kg pigs, with others to 147p/kg for 74kg pigs and 140p/kg for 61kg pigs from the same home.
Cutting Pigs topped at 186p/kg twice from J&B Fentem for 81kg & 79kg pigs, with others from the same home to 178p/kg and 174p/kg. J G Belfield, Sheen had pigs to 180p/kg for 85kg pigs. PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch had an 85kg pig to 162p/kg.

Bacon Pigs topped at 199p/kg for 90kg pigs from D Goldstraw, Meerbrook. PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch saw a trio of pig’s to 188p/kg for 96kg pigs, 90kg pigs from the same home realised 184p/kg and a 104kg pig from the same home realised 182p/kg. J&B Fentem saw a 96kg pig to 186p/kg, with B Minshull, Buxton achieving 184p/kg for a 92kg pig.

Heavy pigs were very much in demand today with the best shaped sorts to 203p/kg for a trio of 107kg pigs from D Goldstraw, who had others to 197p/kg and 178p/kg for 112kg and 108kg pigs. G Myatt, Gratton Lane, achieved 178p/kg and 171p/kg for 116kg and 110kg pigs.

Sows were met with a strong demand again. Average up on the week to 68.48pkg. Top price on the day 122p/kg for a 125kg young sow from B Minshull. Other top prices included 90p/kg for a 172kg sow from J Bailey and a 188kg sow from M Banham, Bromsgrove realised 88p/kg. A run of 5 sows from S Richardson, Barnsley realised 70p/kg.

Another decent entry saw a firmer trade throughout, with a 10p lift in the average.

Best lambs to 277p/kg and plenty at 260p and better. Heavy lambs also a stronger enquiry at 265p/kg or £146.99/head.

Overall average a pleasing 244.5p/kg.

Trade for the best still strong with the processing calves harder to move.

A time of year when empty calves show themselves in the ring a little less well but the best warm calves showing full of milk reap the benefits for the vendors.

Top price today £375 for a solid British Blue bull from the Hulme family at Basford shown at 33 days old. Best continental heifers topped at £275 for the Moss family at Meerbrook for a British Blue at 32 days.

Best Bull bulls over £270 and Blue heifers over £220.
