Market Report Tuesday 23rd May

A sunny Tuesday with plenty of farmers out harvesting. Today saw 1442 sheep, 106 pigs and 188 cattle forward.

Sheep continue to sell well, with a super entry and some excellent quality runs seeing lambs to 400p/kg and £177.30, hogget’s to £320p/kg and £190.28 and cull sheep selling up to £228.

A fantastic trade for fat pigs, seeing some excellent prices exceeding 220p/kg numerous times, topping at 229p/kg for bacon pigs.

A shortage of barren and clean cattle this week, considering the trade we have been used to more are required each week please! Top prices of 225p/kg and £1620, with clean cattle to 258p/kg and £1548.

Dairies harder to place, with the best heifers selling up to £2060.

Calves are in phenomenal demand, with buyers galore looking for all qualities and the best bulls over £500 to £510 & £505 with heifers to £395!! If you have calves to sell then get them to Leek!

A strong trade seeing the best up to 225p/kg for a 720kg Limousin from E J Beech, Cellarhead. A 690kg Holstein sold for 207p/kg from W E Turnock & Sons, Onecote.

A 615kg Belted Galloway realised 193p/kg for F D Horsford, Croxden, with a 735kg Hereford at 188p/kg from AR & KM Alcock, Cheadle and a 750kg Hereford at 184p/kg from LTL Partners, Leigh.

A 670kg Holstein sold for 176p/kg from AA, WA & A Fallows, Brownlow and a 635kg Red Poll sold for 176p/kg from G G Hall & Son, Croxden.

Overall average of 174.76p/kg or £1145.94 per head.

Top headage price of £1620 for the Limousin from E J Beech, with Holsteins to £1428.30, Herefords to £1381.80, £1380; Belted Galloway to £1186.95.

CLEAN CATTLE;
A 600kg Charolais heifer topped the day at 258p/kg from Home Farm, Rushton Spencer and a 590kg British Blue steer sold well at 254p/kg from SP & EE Richardson, Ipstones.

**TRADE ON FIRE**
Pigs have reached another level yet again topping at 229p/kg for 91kg pigs from Massie Farms, Stafford.
Only a handful of sows met with an improved trade roping at 92p/kg. Please look at the averages to see what trade was like today.

Porkers topped at 223p/kg for 70kg pigs from PJ Saunders, Litchfield. Regulars JA&B Minshull had a 73kg pig realise 222p/kg. F Russell, Eggington had 54kg pigs to 212p/kg and 55kg pigs to 209p/kg.

Cutting pigs were met a fierce trade topping at 220p/kg for 80kg pigs from J&B Fentem, Allsop en-le Dale. Who had others to 218×2 & 217. R Brough, Pikehall had a pair of 80kg pigs to 210p/kg. 76kg boars from J&B Fentem Realised 203p/kg.

Beckoners we’re the order of the day topping at 229p/kg for 91kg pigs from Massie Farms, Stafford who had others to 227p/kg x5, 226p/kg x2 & 224p/kg. 89kg boars realised 202p/kg from S Bailey, Kypersley.

Heavies topped at 150p/kg for a 159kg pig from RC Allen, Uttoxeter, who had others to 106p/kg for a 209kg boar. Heavies looked well in the lump topping at £238 & averaging £209.

Cull sows a bit more fierce today topping at 92p/kg for a 258kg sow from S Bailey, Knypersley. PJ Saunders had a 156kg pig to 82p/kg.

Another strange days trading with the world and his wife silaging saw a top price of £2060 for a 6 gallon heifer from Stuart Greenall of Tansley. He had a second heifer to £1900.

A pure bred Simmental stock bull from the Barlow family of Meerbrook reached £2010.

SPRING LAMBS (360);
Numbers on the rise with trade remaining stable. Some lambs appear to be getting rushed to the market at light weights, impacting on the average. Time will tell if it is the right decision.

Best lambs continue to be well bid for topping at 400p/kg and plenty at 380p and better. Best big lambs at £160 plus, topping at £177.30.

Numbers still coming in force and trade holding firm. A bigger differential between the best and the rest as is usual at this time of year. Lean hoggs becoming more difficult to place.

Best types again well bid for at 300p and better to a top of 320p/kg. big hoggs best to sell with 45kg and over hoggs averaging £150 head to a top of £190.28.

Best ewes a very fast trade, topping at £228 from C G Buckston, Sutton on the Hill and top 5 lots averaging £205.

Generally a very solid trade throughout to average £114.75/head.

Unbelievable is the only words to describe the trade at present with six best bulls over £400 including two over £500.

Just look at this trade. Buyers galore and some unbelievable prices for the best quality and well done calves. A stunning Simmental made £510 (25 Days) for Messrs Cooper, Church Lawton with a lovely Limousin at £505 (22 Days) for the Whittaker family, Bosley. 13 best over £350. Medium bulls £250 – £320 with a big lot of 58 Blues from one home generally £100 – £200.
