Market Report Tuesday 25th June

A lovely warm and sunny Tuesday sale with many farmers in the harvest having an impact on numbers

Lambs continue to sell well and topped at 432p/kg with cull ewes to £210

Similar trade in the barrens, topping at 205p/kg, seeing a top headage price of the day at £1491.75

An increased entry in the pigs, seeing a top price of 213p/kg for fat pigs

Less numbers in the calves but still a good trade, with Limousins being the pick of the day, seeing two bulls topping at £395 and a heifer to £358

BARREN COWS (26)
Selling time – 10:00am

A pleasing entry considering that most farmers are busy harvesting.
The top price of the day was a very pleasing 205p/kg which was achieved for a Shorthorn cow weighing 500kg, to reach a headage price of £1025.
Simmental cows reached 195p/kg, weighing 765kg with another at 189p/kg weighing 700kg.
A Friesian weighing 790kg achieved 187p with a Holstein at 585kg realising 187p also and Shorthorn, Holstein and Aberdeen Angus all achieving 179p/kg.
Top headage prices of the day were £1491.75 for the 765kg Simmental and £1477.30 for the 790kg Friesian.

CLEAN CATTLE
A small entry of clean cattle but aa firm trade was seen with the top call of 258p/kg going to a 535kg British Blue heifer for G Baskerville & Co of Kings Bromley.

PIGS (104);

More pigs than previous weeks with a good quality show on offer. Top price for fat pigs 213p/kg and 102p for sows.

Cutters topped at 209p from J&B Fentem. JG Belfield sold to 206p, DB Goldstraw to 202p, 200p and 196p.

Bacon pigs topped to 213p from JG Belfield who had others at 202p. Massis Farms sold to 205p x2, 204p and 203p. J&B Fentem to 204p x2 and C Hine to 202p.

Heavies sold to 178p from JG Belfield and 176p for JA & B Minshull. A run of heavy pigs at 130kg-150kg from new vendor M Gibbons, Preston sold to 140p, 132p for gilts and 118p & 114p for boars.

Sows sold to 102p from RA Hughes, Ilkeston.

Dairies to £2000
A gloriously sunny day meant a quiet one, however, trade still topped at £2000 for a lovely 6gl heifer from Stuart Greenall of Tansley.
Numbers coming forward for the forthcoming weeks include three fresh milkers from Mick Hulse next week and a number of others from regular vendors.
July’s Pedigree sale is set to be a busy one with a special entry of 40 served heifers and young stock from Messrs Brittlebank, a consignment of Shorthorn In-calf heifers and milkers from Messrs Mellor already entered.
A number of herds are also in the pipeline so watch this space.

More numbers coming forward. Trade back a little, in-line with the national trend but pleasing to see competitive bidding throughout, seeing best types to 432p and an overall average at 368p/kg.
Best big lambs to 415p or £210.60/head.
More best shaped lambs and heavy lambs could be sold each week.

50 Hoggs saw a firmer trade for the best sorts., but the rest harder to sell and similar to cull ewe price. Best to 252p/kg or £136.08/head.

CULL EWES (39)
A modest entry with many vendors taking advantage of the warm weather and getting grass in. Top call for ewes £210 from D Williams, Basford. Competitive bidding for all types, Texel/Continental types £150+. Leaner ewes generally £70-£100.

Overall average £136.16/head

Tups topped at £179 from W Smith, Basford.

Half numbers on a hot and sunny day in Leek.
18 CONTINENTAL BULLS
Solid money for all calves with the bidders looking for numbers but they were not about today. Top call today was £395 x2 for a lovely Limousin from Brian Goodwin, Upper Hulme, with all the better sorts comfortably over £320+ and only a handful under £300.
