Market Report Tuesday 25th October

An Autumnal Tuesday sale and good numbers forward in most sections. A good enquiry for barren cattle this week, seeing a top price of 170p/kg and £1461.25, with clean cattle to 216p/kg.

Lambs sold on a solid trade, seeing the best quality up to 253p/kg, although a shortage of best meated lambs this week. Cull ewes a better enquiry seeing a top of £169.

Not as many dairies this Tuesday but still a super trade for the quality on offer, seeing a second calver to £2600, and heifers to £2100.

Fat pigs a slightly improved trade on the week, to 181p/kg for bacon pigs and sows to 66p/kg.

Less calves on offer and trade patchy with quality selling well as always, but other qualities harder to place. Top price of £340 twice for British Blue bull calves and Charolais heifers to £295.

A similar entry sold on a solid trade with the best to 170p/kg for a 735kg Blonde from James Gilman, Bosley, with Angus’ to 167p/kg twice for a 875kg & 785kg cow from S Pennington & Son, Altrincham.

Black & white’s sold up to 165p/kg for a 765kg Holstein from LTL Partners Ltd, Leigh.

Top headage price of £1461.25 for Angus cows from S Pennington & Son, with others at £1310.95 and Holsteins to £1349.40 & £1262.25 & blonde’s to £1249.50.

An overage Angus bull weighing 645kg realised 159p/kg for Will Hurley, Macc Forest.

A small entry topped at 216p/kg for a 615kg Montbeliarde steer from Home Farm, Rushton Spencer, and a 665kg Hereford steer at 215p/kg from the same home.

A second calver with a PLI of £503 topped the day on Tuesday from the Easoms of Oakerthorpe the ABS Jeromino daughter was sold giving 31kg for £2600 and went to James Parkes of Melton Mowbray. They also had another second calver to £2280 to the same home.
Heifers reached £2100 from Mark Baskerville of Standon, Eccleshall.

PIGS (129);

A few less about this week and a mixed quality entry. Pork pigs sold up to 175p/kg for a 68kg pig from A Worth, with 73kg pigs at 157p/kg from J & B Fentem who also sold 73.5kg pigs for 145p/kg.

Cutters topped at 175p/kg for a 82kg pig from J & B Fentem, who also sold 84kg pigs at 169p/kg and two pens at 160p/kg. 171p/kg was paid for a pair of 81kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, with 168p/kg for a 84kg pig from S Bailey, Biddulph.

Bacon pigs to 181p/kg for 92kg pigs Massie Farms, who dominated the bacon pig prices with three pens at 179p/kg, a pen of 94kg pigs at 177p/kg, another at 174p/kg and two at 173p/kg. Heavies sold up to 157p/kg for a 108kg pig.

More sows about selling up to 66p/kg for a 284kg sow from Ray Rowlinson, with a run from one home at 66p/kg and another five at 65p/kg for S Richardson.

A reasonable entry selling on another competitive trade, although prices are less and in line with the national trends, however generally would be stronger than might have been expected pre-sale.

Best sorts again selling a premium prices, however less of those sorts available to bid at. Best at 253p/kg and plenty 240p and above.

Big lambs in demand topping at 250p/kg for heavies and 237p/kg for overweight’s. Top headage at £143.36/head. 45kg and over averaged £115 per head.

Overall average at 228p/kg.

A slightly smaller entry but still good numbers and trade notably sharper for all types, particularly meated sorts and more grazing buyers looking for stock.

Best Texel’s to £169/head from R & S Bailey, Rushton, Strong Suffolk’s to £140 and heavy Mules at £110 – £110/head.

Best Rams to £160 from S Beswick, Buxton.

Overall average at £84/head.
