Market Report Tuesday 27th June

A warm Tuesday in Leek did not stop the trade in all sections.

A full shed of dairies at Leek on Tuesday met an electric trade topping at £3050 with 35 passing the £2000 mark.
Lambs Trade still competitive throughout, topping at 332p/kg returning an average of 286.31p/kg Hoggs a good entry for time of year topping at 270p/kg. Ewes trade steadier this week, returning an average of £93.35. and topping at £162.

Pigs Pigs getting dearer each week, fats to £239p/kg and a massive £400/head, more Sows around to 98p/kg

Calves remain a buoyant trade with 155 sold, topping at £500 for a wonderful Limousin Calf A big line up of buyers led to a solid price for all.

Barren cows topped at 185p/kg for a Friesian Cow from C W Pearce, Tean
Similar types sold weekly.

Insufficient numbers forward saw another sharp trade. No showstoppers in the entry but better cows (Montbeliarde Black & white) at 170p and better top at 185p for an 8 year old Friesian cow.
Feeding cows are needed weekly and again very well sold today.
Overall average at 155p/kg for an entry dominated by cows “straight from work”.
Just 1 Bull today at 158p weighing 890kg.

TRADE ON ANOTHER LEVEL!!! Fats pigs in serious demand topping at 239p/kg or a massive £400/head. More sows about topping at 98p/kg. More pigs required each week please.

Less porkers on offer top price 236p/kg for 69kg pigs from J&B Fentem, Allsop en-le Dale, others from the same home realised 233 x2 & 232p/kg. A pen of four 68kg saddlebacks realised 100p/kg.

Cutting Pigs
Cutters topped at 237p/kg for 79kg pigs from J&B Fentem. Others from the same home to 234 x2, 232, 229×2, 228×2. JW & B Bennett, Abbots Bromley achieved 233p/kg for 80kg pigs nothing below 222p/kg today.

Bacon Pigs
Bacon pigs were again in serious demand topping at 239p/kg for 90kg pigs from Massie Farms, Stafford, a run from the same home to 238, 237 x4, 236p x2 & 234p/kg. Bacon pigs are a serious trade with boars well over 220p/kg.

Top price 206p/kg for 117kg pig from C Blackshaw. Rosie Watson, Fenny Bentley had a 137kg gilt to 200p/k. S J Booth, Lymm saw 180p/kg for a 163kg boar. DJ Pope, Buckingham had a pair of cracking heavy gilts topping at 164p/kg for a 244kg clean gilt or £400 in the lump and another 234kg gilt to 139p/kg or £325.26.

Plenty of sows about today averages look healthy at 90p/kg topping at from DJ Pope, Buckingham for a 326kg sow. Others from the same home to 94 x2, 90 x4. J &B Fentem had a 284kg sow to 94p/kg and a 224kg sow to 90p/kg.

11 Weaners from C Wardle, Sandbach topped at £37/head for 18kg weaners.

35 OVER £2000

Topping the day was a second calver from the Needham family of Rushton Spencer at £3050. They had a superb run of 8, 6 of which were second and third calvers of which all passed the £2000 mark to average an amazing £2508. The cows were all clinched by John Bayley of Nuneaton with the heifers travelling to a local purchaser.

A pretty heifer from Stuart Greenall of Tansley by Cogent Twist reached £2260 to Andrew Hulme of Leek.

A great crowd gathered for the dispersal on behalf of Arthur and Helen Mayer of Brown Edge. The first through the ring, a fresh third calver by Aintree Spartacus giving 43kg reached £2980 also to J Bayley. He also went on to take a May calved fourth calver and second calver both at £2950.

Another fourth calver giving 42kg went to Messrs Pickford of Leek at £2950. Hot in pursuit was an April calved third calver giving 32kg reaching £2700 to Luke Neville of Tansley. A superb 21 passed the £2000 mark within the dispersal to average an excellent £1779 reflecting the great cows that Arthur and Helen had produced.

A seasonal entry saw a trade at reduced levels so most abattoirs focusing on the festival at the end of the week and not doing a “normal” kill day.
Trade is however still competitive throughout, particularly fort he best, albeit at lower levels. Best lamb selling to 332p/kg from Ian Wilson & Family with their excellent run of lambs achieving 330p and better. Best big lamb saw very good bidding to top at 322p/kg or £159.30/head.
Overall average reported at 286.31p/kg which compares very well to other outlets on the same day.

HOGGETS (222);
An unbelievable number forward for the time of year, and trade still competitive for medium sorts but they are getting fewer in number and a lot of very lean end of the road types in the entry.
Best types to 270p/kg and better types generally 240p and better.

Trade steadier on the week but averages still looking respectable at the end of the day with best types at £162 for Texels, £152 for Charolais and best mules still top side of £100.

Overall average at £93.35, although some ewes could be £10 -£20 back on the week.

Good numbers once again and a big line up of buyers led to a solid price including some magical top prices.

Some very smart calves at the top end that the vendors would be very proud of including, a stunning top price of £500 for a wonderful Limousin Bull, 41 days out of a Friesian cow from the Whittaker Family from Bosley. 11 Best Bulls £338-£500; Medium Bulls £240-£310 with smaller sorts less.

No dearer than the last couple of weeks but numerous buyers for the quantity on offer. A trio of best topped £300 with a high of £345 for a Simmental from RG&AS Williamson, Bram House Farm. 11 best topped £240; medium £200-£230; with smaller sorts under £200.
