Market Report Tuesday 28th February

The last Tuesday for February saw some good entries forward with 171 cattle and 1244 sheep forward.

A strong trade for barren cattle as they continue to be in demand, with the best to 225p/kg and £1383.75.

The dairy shed met a mixed trade and quality, but heifers up to £2200 and cows for £2040.

A large entry of pigs sold on a fantastic trade, with numerous pens £2 and above! Top prices of 215p/kg twice for bacon pigs and sows to £99p/kg.

Hogg’s sold to a good enquiry and best lambs selling very well, up to 292p/kg and heavies to £148.41/head. Cull ewes sold up to £174 and plainer ewes harder to place.

Demand for calves is still high with the current beef sales, seeing the best qualities to £415 for Blue bulls and heifers to £310 .

A good entry sold on a solid trade, seeing the best at £2/kilo! Top price of 225p/kg for a 615kg Charolais from S Kidd Farmers, Longnor and a 500kg Hereford at 208p/kg from D & E A Jeffery, Roston.

Other cows sold to 197p/kg for a 615kg Limousin from D & EA Jeffery and 196p/kg for a 490kg British Blue from J & D Kidd, Flash.

Overall average of 163.96p/kg or £1022.73 per head.

Top headage price of £1383.75 for Charolais with Holsteins to £1335.90; Friesians to £1325.25; other Charolais to £1314.

Trade continues to be unpredictable which probably wasn’t helped by the mixed quality on offer.

Topping the day at £2200 was a Montbeliarde X Heifer from the Pearson family of Peak Forest with cows peaking at £2040 for a second calver from the Darwin family of Sheffield.

Further details will be out shortly for the Herd Dispersal on behalf of the Gosling family on 14th March.

Trade once again flying high in the pig shed today. Those best pigs are easily sold and met with fierce demand. Top price 215p/kg x2 from Massie Farms, Stafford for 95kg pigs and from JA & B Minshull, Buxton for 93kg pigs. Those best meated sows on fire topping at 99p/kg for a 207kg sow from R Watson, Fenny Bentley.

Porkers topped at 181p/kg for 69kg pigs from J&B Fentem, Allsop En-Le Dale, who had others to 178p/kg and 170p/kg for 75kg pigs and 69kg pigs. JG Belfield, Sheen had a 75kg pig to 179p/kg. A few coloured leaners sorts on offer this week were harder to place which were reflected in the averages.

Cutters topped at 213p/kg for 84kg pigs from J&B Fentem, Allsop En-Le Dale, who had others 210p/kg, 204p/kg for 78kg pigs & 79kg pigs. JG Belfield, Sheen as 83kg pigs to 209p/kg. R&L Vernon, Marston Montgomery has 84kg boars to 194p/kg.

Baconers were once again on fire with over 10 pens over the 200p/kg mark. Top price 215p/kg x2 from Massie Farms, Stafford for 95kg pigs, who had others to 214p/kg, 212p/kg, 210p/kg, 208p/kg & 206p/kg. JA & B Minshull, Buxton also had 215p/kg for 93kg pigs. S Bailey, Knypersley saw 213p/kg for an 86kg pig.

Heavy pigs topped at 191p/kg for W Hurley, Macclesfield for a 113kg pig. PF + PD Parsons had a trio of 105kg pigs to 172p/kg.

Best Meated Sows topped at 99p/kg for a 207kg sow from RA Watson, Fenny Bentley, who had another to 96p/kg for a 246kg sow.

An increased entry met a solid trade throughout, and a gain the best lambs in very strong demand throughout.

Best sorts to 292p/kg and plenty at 270p/kg and above. Heavy lambs adding up well for the best at £148.41.

Overall average at 239p/kg.

A few less but trade continues to be strong, even better this week than last weeks levels.

Buyers in town for the best and second quality today with a good show of calves on offer. 8 better bulls topped £330 with a high of £415 for Graham Myatt’s Blue with Andy Williamson at £390 and Stephen Johnson at £370. Mediums bulls £250 – £300 with a few smaller bulls under £200.

Peak Farmers Group
