Market Report Tuesday 29th October

The averages in the calf section speak for themselves with some excellent calves on offer today, seeing a top price of £500 for a Limousin bull and £295 for a British Blue heifer

Just over 1,000 head of sheep on offer with lambs topping at 348p/kg and ewes reaching £236

Similar number of pigs to last week with a top price of 205p/kg for fats

Less dairies on offer compared to the last couple of weeks with a top price of £2100 for a Montbeliarde X heifer

Similar numbers in the Barrens with a top price of 212p.kg and a top headage price of £1477.40

BARREN COWS
Selling time – 10:00am

A Limousin cow, weighing 685kg topped the Barrens at 212p/kg for K L Potts of Macclesfield to produce a headage price of £1452.20 with a Holstein Friesian, weighing 560kg, selling for 192p/kg to produce a headage price of £1075.20 for KW & AM Minshull of Macclesfield, who also sold an 830kg Norwegian Red to 178p/kg to gross £1477.40 which was the top headage price of the day. Also, to 178p/kg, was a Charolais weighing 715kg to give a headage price of £1272.70 for C & EJ Whilock of Werrington.

A Highland bull at 39 months of age, weighing 480kg, sold to 141p/kg to give a gross price of £676.80.

The overall average in the Barrens was 150.42p/kg.

CLEAN CATTLE
A small entry of clean cattle with a top price of 219p/kg being paid for a 24-month-old Friesian heifer weighing 590kg to gross £1292.10 for RG & AS Williamson of Wetley Rocks.

Three Dexter steers produced a top price of 154p/kg for a 340kg beast, producing a gross price of £523.60 for D Littleton of Norton Green.

An overall average in the clean section was 169.94p/kg

Similar numbers to last week, a poorer show of quality on the whole and trade would be 10p less on the whole. Top price 205p for fat pigs and sows to 84p.

Porkers sold to 200p for Sam Harper who had others for 175p. W Stamper sold to 170p and 140p.

Cutters sold to 197p for J&B Fentem who had others at 195p. S&S Harper sold to 195p, W Stamper to 193p. C Hine to 190p.

Bacon pigs sold to 205p for PF+PD Parsons who had others to 202p. Massie Farms to 204p, 203p, 200p, 199p, 198p. S Bailey to 200p. J&B Fentem to 198p.

Heavies sold to 180p for J&B Fentem. J McAleenan sold 156kg and 148kg boars to 135p and 120p.

Sows would be a solid trade to 84p for W Stamper. leaner sows sold to 68p, 66p,40p for J Sheard. Sam Harper to 60p.

15 Milkers & In-Calf Heifers

A smaller entry than recent weeks but a ring full of buyers and purchasers for all grades.

Regular vendor Michael Hulse of Consall topped the day at £2100 with a fresh Montbelirde X heifer giving nearly 30kg.

Plenty of heifers £1770 to £2000 with stronger framed types definitely showing superior demand.

Several potential purchasers left empty handed.

A run of three in-calf Holstein heifers topped at £1240.

Herd sales being booked for next month.

A decent entry, selling on a solid trade to average a very respectable 283p/kg.

Best lambs all 300p/kg and better, topping at 348p/kg and big lambs very well bid for, again, with plenty at £140 + to a top of £165.20.

More could have been sold to vendors advantage.

A similar show of numbers to last week, meat once again wanted and those who brought meated ewes were very well rewarded. A good number of lean types and grazing ewes forward again, all met with competitive bidding but at a price. Top price £236 from KN House, Somerford. F Yates sold to £191 and £183. Philip Smith to £172.

Good numbers and some better calves on offer this week that was certainly appreciated by the buyers.
53 CONTINENTAL BULLS
Very very dear with some of the highest averages ever in Leek. Some good calves on offer and there were buyers galore for them. Four strongest and best bulls topped £400 and up to a stunning £500 for a very posh shapy Limousin from Andy Williamson, Wetley Rocks. Eleven best £370 +. Mediums £300-£350 with only the smalls and not so well-bred calves under £270. Look at today’s averages: –
