Market Report Tuesday 2nd January

A quieter Tuesday following the Christmas break with a very wet day to start the New Year off in Leek. Overall numbers down over most areas but the weather didn’t dampen the buyer’s enthusiasm.

Buyers out for all categories in the Calves with Peter and Christine Gilman topping the trade at £410 with an Aberdeen Angus Bull.

Less Sheep around but a solid trade nonetheless, seeing a top price of 324p/kg for D Edgecox.

An increased entry of Barrens today with a similar trade and a top price of 194p/kg or £1105.80/head.

Flying trade for fat pigs today, topping at 222p, with 145 forward in total.

Only a small entry of Barren Cows today but plenty of eager buyers, more cattle needed.

 

BARREN COWS (17);

Plenty of trade about for with a top price of 183p paid for a 610kg Charolais from D & DM Turner of Macclesfield, 173p for a 715kg Shorthorn from S & J Ryder of Dilhorne, 170p for a 730kg Blonde Cow from CH Ede & Son of Ashbourne and also 170p for a 645kg Brown Swiss Cow from Messrs Shuker of Bosley.

Top headage price of the day was £1241 for Mr Ede’s Blonde Cow with a dairy Shorthorn, for S & J Ryder, grossing £1236.95 and the Charolais from Messrs Turner at £1116.30. The Brown Swiss Cow, from Messrs Shuker of Bosley, grossed at £1096.50.

 

PIGS (145);

Selling time – 9:15am

A strong entry of pigs with 145 forward. Fats were a flying trade topping at 222p or £214.24.

Porkers were a solid trade, topping at 219p from distant travellers, LR Jones, Conwy, who had others to 203p. J&B Fentem to 203p and R Brough to 186p. coloureds to 100p.

Cutting pigs sold to 217p from J&B Fentem who sold others to 216p, 214p & 205p for boars. LR Jones to 217p & 207p, coloured to 120p.

Bacon pigs sold to 222p from Massie Farms who sold others to 221p, 219px4, 218p x4. N Turner sold pigs to 219p & 217p. S Bailey to 215p.

Heavies topped at 184p, 154px2 for PF+PD Parsons.

A smashing Heifer, from the Easom Family of Oakerthorpe, topped the dairies at £2840 by Denovo Generation, she went to Luke Neville of Tansley who also took a
second one, from the same vendor, at £2320.

Cows topped at £1900 for a second calver, also from Messrs Easom.

Overall trade was good for the best with second and third quality proving harder to place.

A very small show, no doubt partly due to the horrendous weather conditions, selling on a very strong trade.

Best Lambs regularly 300p plus to top 324p/kg and best Lambs to £159.56/head.

Commercial Lambs generally 270-285p/kg with nothing below 250p/kg.

More could be sold weekly to vendor’s advantage!

A small Tuesday entry as vendors waken for the New Year.

What a trade, seeing buyers out for all categories.

Top price of £410 for Peter & Christine Gilman and Family with a Blue Bull at 31 days old.

All the best Continental Bulls £330 and above from eight different Leek vendors.

Continental Heifers were good to sell with the best Blue & Simmental crosses £270 and above and £330 for the best for Steven Wayne of Radbourne.
