Market Report Tuesday 3rd September

Almost 1300 head of sheep on offer in Leek this week, seeing Lambs topping at 341p/kg and Ewes to £197/head.

It’s good to see new and seasoned buyers in the calf shed with Calf trade off the clock, with a top price of £435 for a Charolais bull and £395 for an INRA95 heifer.

The Dairy shed saw a top call of £3500 for a heifer from a Chesterfield vendor with many others topping the £3000 mark.

Increased numbers in Barren and Clean cattle with Barrens topping at 207p/kg and Clean to 258p/kg.

More Pigs forward but still selling on a solid trade, topping at 220p/kg.

BARREN COWS

An increased entry in the Barren section, seeing a firm trade with a top price of 207p for a Hereford cow weighing 650kg to give a headage price of £1345.50 from J W Brandrick & Son of Beamhurst.

A Blonde cow, from J Gilman & Partners of Bosley, weighing 635kg, sold up to 189p/kg to give a headage price of £1200.15.

Top headage price of the day was £1377.75 for a Holstein weighing 835kg.

 

CLEAN CATTLE

An increased entry in the clean section also this week, with a run of four Stabiliser X steers, from D A Whitehurst, Leigh, topping at 258p/kg weighing 555kg.

An Aberdeen Angus heifer, weighing 475kg, topped at 210p/kg for J S Sheard of Congleton and a Charolais stock bull sold well at 171p/kg,  weighing 960kg, for S Kidd Farmers of Longnor, to £1641.60/head.

More forward after last week’s flyer, trade on the whole is still solid. Best gilts 215p+ and best boars 205p+. Top call 220p for fat pigs and 101p for sows. 

 

Porkers sold 212p for J&B Fentem.

 

Cutters sold to 215p x2 for J&B Fentem, who sold others to 214p. RA Hughes sold to 207p & 206p.

 

Bacon pigs sold 220p for S Bailey. PF+PD Parsons sold to 219p, 217p, 216p. Massie Farms to 216p x2, 214p, 213p. C Hine to 214p.

 

Heavies sold to 180p for RA Hughes, New vendor N Sparks, Tarporley sold to 180p x2 and 156p. GA Pawson sold a heavy 144kg boar to 152p.

 

Sows sold to 101p for Stephen Booth who had a run to 99px2, 94p and 48p Ray Rowlinson sold to 100p.

Dairies to £3,500

A smashing entry in the dairy shed on Tuesday saw another very swift trade topping at £3500 for a superb heifer from Miss America Family from David Brailsford of
Chesterfield.

Also tipping over £3000 at £3060 was a 33kg heifer from Michael & Caroline Wainwright with another from the Shepherd Family of Bakewell at £3,000.

A very sweet heifer, from Messrs Phillips of Winkhill reached £2500.

A great run of Swedish Red X and Montbeliarde X cows, from Mick & Kay Hulse of Consall met a fast trade, topping at £2320 twicw over. The first for a Montbeliarde
X second calver and the second for another Holstein X second calver, they also saw their Swedish Red X third calver to £2300.

The Hulse’s have another six entered for next week with good entries also forward for the Pedigree Sale in a fortnight.

A good seasonal entry, selling on a steadier trade, but by the end of the day we seemed to compare well to other outlets on the same day.

Overall average at 280p/kg, includes a good proportion of underweight and under finished lambs.

Best of the day topped at 241p/kg, with best lambs generally 300p and better. Bigger lambs best to sell, topping at £165/head and heavies averaging 285p/kg or £135/head.

A large entry of ewes saw competitive bidding for all types. A large contingent of swales, hill types and feeding ewes were forward with 80+ swales on offer which
are reflected in the averages, with several grazing buyers in operation. Top call £197 for Texels from Callum Banks, Newcastle.

Plain cutting ewes £90-£105

Hill types £40-60.
