Market Report Tuesday 4th March

The New Zealand Friesian herd dispersal was the highlight of the dairies with a top price of £2750 and a herd average at £1952 with the commercial entry topping at £2920

More pigs forward this week, selling on a similar trade, with a top price of 174.58p/kg

More Barrens needed to meet demand, top price this week was 247p/kg with a top headage price of £1926.60

Calves still selling on a strong trade but more needed to meet demand, a Charolais bull topped the day at £520 with a British Blue heifer reaching £468

Over 1200 head of sheep on offer this week with a top price for Hoggs at 397p/kg seeing a top headage price of £220.80/head. Best ewes topped at £270 with more required to meet demand.

Another very firm trade with a good company of buyers ensuring that all cows were bid for keenly.

Top price was 247p/kg paid for a 780kg Holstein from WE Turnock & Sons to gross £1926.60.

A 740kg Holstein from J & R Maydew achieved 227p/kg and a 685kg Friesian from KW Powell realised 222p/kg.

Overall average 201.52p/kg and £1202.43 including a number of smaller leaner cows.

Again, more pigs forward this week, trade similar to last week but not as good a quality show of pigs. Top price 198p for fat pig, gilts generally 190p+ and boars 165p+
Porkers sold to 164p for B Minshull.

Cutters sold to 198p for A Shinton, Ellesmere who had boars to 170p. B Minshull to 194p. S Bailey to 190p, J&B Fentem to 186p, 179p. A Brown to 185p.

Bacon pigs sold to 195p, 194p, 190p for J&B Fentem. Massie farms sold to 195p, 193p, 189px2. C Hine to 190p, 186p.

Heavies sold to 170p for R Rowlinson.

A poorer show of sows sold to 71p for R Rowlinson, D Morris to 60p. Large black sows to 45p

New Zealand Herd to £2750 average £1952
Another fierce trade for milkers saw the commercial entry top at £2920 for a second calver from Messrs Easom with a heifer from the same home at £2900.

Purchasers travelled from far and wide for the herd dispersal of New Zealand Friesians, on behalf of Kieran and Gaynor Wellwood, which saw the best reach £2750. 103 over £2000 and the whole herd of 188 head average £1952.

Topping the day was a second calver by Crossans Critical, she was clinched by the Griffiths Family of Pwllheli at £2750 who also took the second highest priced animal at £2650. One of a number of bulk buyers, which included Foremore Ltd of Shepton Mallet and Kingstone Hill Farm Ltd of Abingdon.

A phenomenal 103 passed the £2000 mark to average an exceptional £1952.
50 Fresh calvers to come in two weeks (18th March) from the same home with them being unable to make the sale today due to being so fresh.

The herd came from grazing based system where minimal concentrates are fed. A freshly calved average of 21kg made them well sort after with purchasers bidding with confidence for the goods on offer.

An increased entry sold on a slightly steadier trade for some sorts, but generally very well bid for. Heavy weight lambs just as good to sell but heavy weight coming forward in bigger numbers and demand for these eased back.

Best sorts to 397p/kg and plenty at 370p/kg and better. Top headage at £220.80/head.

SQQ average at 340p/kg and 329p/kg overall.

Overall average at £154/head!

More best shaped lambs could be sold each week.

Slightly fewer numbers and more smaller sorts forward but trade still as strong as previous weeks and more numbers needed to meet buyer demand.
Top call was an impressive £520 for a strong bull from D & G Tudor with heifers topping at £468 for Messrs Williamson for a fantastic British Blue heifer calf.

As before, more numbers are needed to meet demand with trade still very fast, topping at £520 for D & G Tudor for a Charolais with British Blues close behind at £470 for W Myatt & Partners. £365.
