Another successful day’s trade in Leek seeing 100% clearance overall but more could be sold each week in every section of the market

1,129 head of sheep on offer with Lambs selling up to 361p/kg, topping at £195.30/head and Ewes topping at £265 for a Texel

Dairies topped at £2980 for a 33kg Heifer

Calves are on a roaring trade at the moment with a Charolais Bull to £475 and a Charolais Heifer to £355

Barrens to 183p/kg and a top headage price of £1618.50

Another firm trade and many more cows required to satisfy the current demand.

Top price was 183p/kg for a 600kg Friesian cow for RG & AS Williamson with others up to 177p/kg for a 775kg Holstein for WE Turnock & Sons and 176p/kg for a 705kg Aberdeen Angus for WL Brough.

Top headage price achieved was £1618.50 for a 975kg Shorthorn from G G Hall & Son, closely followed by an 865kg Shorthorn at £1453.20 for the same vendor.

A small entry but all were well sold.

Pigs still remain a serious trade, a few more forward with averages back a penny or two on the week. Fat pigs topped at 233p on three occasions and sows topped at 98p.
Porkers topped at 230p for B Minshull, Buxton. J&B Fentem to 230p & 219p for boars. M Banham, Bromsgrove to 225p, RA Hughes to 224p and DH&J Pouslon, Camerthen to 223p.
Cutters sold to 233p twice from PF+PD Parsons and J&B Fentem. B Minshull to 231p. Sam Harper to 230p and Tommy Nicholls to 213p.
Bacon Pigs sold to 233p for B Minshull, Massie Farms to 232p, 230px2, 229p x2. J&B Fentem to 231p. RA Hughes to 230p, C Hine to 228p and Robinson Partners to 227p.
Heavies to 224p & 190p for C Hine. PJ Saunders to 286p for 126kg pigs. M Banham had a run of 115kg to 164kg pigs selling from 158p to 176p.
Sows sold to 98p for DH&J Poulson who had others to 94p & 91p. J&B Fentm sold to 91p. C Hine to 86p and M Banham to 72p.

DAIRIES TO £2980

Another very fast trade for dairies at Leek with a 33kg heifer from Micheal and Caroline Wainwright topping the day at £2980. Others from the same home-made £2980 and £2420.

A lovely heifer from June Sherratt of Meerbrook reached £2440.

LAMBS (925)
A useful increase in numbers met a firmer trade and more could have still been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

Best sorts selling to 361p/kg from Frank Heath, Pipe Gate and plenty of other best sorts at 330p/kg and better.

Heavy lambs well bid for, topping at £195.30/head. Plenty of well fleshed heavy lambs at £150-£170/head.

Overall average at 310p/kg or £132/head.

Ewes off the clock the dearest they have been. A few plainer and hill types included today which were all met with a tremendous trade, Meated ewes £160 plus all day.

Ewes topped at £265 for a Texel from Ben Vernon. Frank Heath saw £224 and A&JE Goldstraw £200.

Meated Continental types £150-£190

Mules sold to £149, plainer mules generally £125-£140.

Plain feeding types £90-£110

Tups topped at £265 from Sam Harper.

Overall Average £137.

Calf numbers still hard to find with the trade exceptionally hot for all shapes and sizes.

Off the clock and as dear as we have seen them. Just three best bulls on offer that sold at £455, £455 and £475 with plenty of medium types £320-£370. Top today was a lovely Charolais from Messrs Gould at £475.
