A Limousin cow topped the barrens today at £1956.40, selling to 268p/kg for E Etches of Elkstones.

Friesian cows sold to a top of £1635.20 at 224p/kg for S J Hooley of Macclesfield.

CLEAN CATTLE
Clean cattle topped at £1808.80 for a British Blue steer which sold to 304p/kg for T J Partington of Burton on Trent. A Simmental steer sold to £1717.60, also selling to 304p/kg from the same vendor.

Similar numbers forward trade a bit less on the week topping at 180p for S Bailey for best gilts. Gilts generally 130p – 150p, boars 90p – 110p. sows to 40p.

Cutters sold to 130p for J&B. Fentem.

Bacon pigs sold to 180p for S Bailey. 172p for DB Goldstraw. 138p for Massie farms. 137p. GR Weston 134p. J&B Fentem 115p.

A pre pedigree sale entry but trade was very fast with only one strong good bodied cow that shot away to £2950 for Paul & George Swindell at Chelmorton. This 4th calver was sold giving 44kg and stayed local at Leek.

Half the entry sold to £2600 or above with top price of the day £3580 for regular exhibitor Stuart Greenall of Tansley. This magic daughter, born May ’23 saw spirited bidding and was sold giving 34kg.

The Wainwrights at Dowlow were in to see us again with a smart fresh heifer giving 26kg at £3280 to another local purchaser at Basford. Traditional Friesian heifers were well sold in the £2200 to £2350 range.

The special entry of young Pedigree Dairy Shorthorn calves were all 30 to 36 days old with a top of £355 seeing others to £345 and £320.

Once again, a large entry of lambs this week, trade overall down on the week, in line with the national trend.
Again, plenty of store types forward which would be better sold in the Saturday store sales.
Commercial lambs 325p – 345p/kg with best export types 350p – 370p topping at 376p. Plain sorts in and around 300p – 310p/kg.
Big lambs forward in large numbers today and a bit harder to place as is reported across the country, but the very best sorts adding up nicely to £234.72

Overall averages at 328p/kg SQQ and £149.90 overall.
