A quieter day at Leek this Tuesday with 1194 sheep and 174 cattle forward.

BARREN COWS (15);
Selling time – 10:00am

Unfortunately to small of an entry for the deamnd on offer at Leek seeing prices to 189p/kg for a 760kg Angus cow from S Pennington & Son, Altrincham, with a 865kg Limousin to 185p/kg for J W Hudson, and other Angus’ from S Pennington & Son at 180p/kg (860kg) and 179p/kg (660kg).

Holsteins sold to 181p/kg for a 700kg cow from MJ & J Rhodes, Crewe and a 765kg Ayrshire to 178p/kg for MJ & D Needham.

Overall average of 163.38p/kg or £1136.07/head.

Top headage price of £1600.25 for the Limousin from J W Hudson, and Angus’ to £1548 and £1436.40, Ayrshire to £1361.70 and Holsteins to £1332.10.

CLEAN CATTLE (6);
Again a small entry forward with 3 Friesian bulls selling well to 229p/kg (595kg), 226p (575kg) and 222p/kg (535kg) from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

A good trade for any quality with the best to £2200 from the Callwood family of Knutsford who had a second to £2010.

A lot more pigs forward this week, trade down on the whole across the board top Price on the day 200p/kg for 88kg pigs from B Vernon, Marston Montgomery. A few sows about and a mixed trade with varying quality on offer.
Porkers short on numbers with only 6 on offer and a few feeding types among those. Toping at 168p/kg for a 67kg pig from DH&J Poulson, Llangadog, who had a 68kg pig realise 150p/kg.

Cutters topped 182p/kg for J&B Fentem, Allsop en-le Dale for 80kg pigs, others from the same home to 180p/kg, 166p/kg and 163p/kg for 84kg, 80kg & 85kg pigs. JA&B Minshull, Buxton had 81kg pigs to 174p/kg.

Baconers topped at 200p/kg for 88kg pigs from B Vernon, Marston Montgomery. Massie Farms, Stafford had a run of pigs to 196p/kg x3, 195p/kg, 194p/kg x2. S Bailey, Knypersley saw 192p/kg for 92kg pigs and PF&PD Parsons, Whitchurch had 188p/kg for 97kg pigs.

Heavy pigs topped at 146p/kg for a 118kg pig from PF&PD Parsons, Whitchurch, who also had a pair of 120kg pigs to 140p/kg.

Sows Topped at 75p/kg twice for K H Fradley, Derby for a 270kg sow and a 237 kg sow. A few plainer feeding sorts were harder to place generally 20-30p/kg.

Cull boars were met with a firmer trade topping at 30p/kg twice for a 293kg boar from K H Fradley, Derby. RA Watson, Fenny Bentley had a 348kg Boar to 30p/kg.

A good entry sold on a solid trade, with prices slightly up on the week and some excellent run of hoggs forward. Top price today of 295p/kg for 41.5kg hoggs from R & S Bailey, with a heavy lambs coming to £148.26/head. Best quality lambs continue to sell well with the 39kg – 45kg bracket averaging 250.66p/kg!

Overall average of 246.43p/kg SQQ and 239.39p/kg overall.

An excellent trade throughout to average £110/head overall and again, some excellent run of stronger ewes in demand. Top prices of £186 twice for Texel ewes, and numerous prices £130 plus!

Good numbers again this week but with the weather forecast not conducive to rearing calves, trade was a little easier this week.

32 Continental Bulls
The best good to sell with averages good across the breeds. 11 better calves topped £300 including a tremendous Blue at £435 for Messrs Handford, Birch Vale with Peter Gilman at £395 and Andrew Hulme at £385. Medium bulls £200 – £300 with smaller calves looking value for money under £200.

29 Continental Heifers
Harder to sell today with less people looking to ‘take a chance’ unless at low levels. A good Simmy made £245 with just 5 over £200.
