A good company of buyers saw a sharp trade in the barrens this week with more needed to meet demand.

Topping the day was a Charolais cow weighing 780kg which sold to 280p/kg for HG & J Evans of Macclesfield which also achieved the top headage price of £2184. Another Charolais weighing 725kg sold to 259p/kg to gross £1877.75 for J F Barber of Quarnford.

A Hereford bull weighing 1000kg sold to 273p/kg to gross £2730.

CLEAN
Clean cattle sold well today with a top call of 342p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus steer at 18 months old weighing 520kg which grossed at £1778.40 for M R Whitehurst of Leigh. This was closely followed by a Simmental bull weighing 635kg at 16 months of age which sold to 340p/kg to gross £2159 for J M Robinson of Swythamley.

Stabiliser X steers topped at 336p/kg with a gross of £1831.20 for D A Whitehurst of Leigh.

An entry of four Friesian bulls weighing 605kg, 590kg x2, and 565kg sold to 336p, 335p, 334p and 333p respectively to gross £2032, £1976, £1970 and £1881 for J E Archer & Sons of Hilton.

Overall average for clean cattle was a very pleasing 333.3p/kg.

A strong entry of pigs today with 134 seen and sold to meet a strong demand with averages 10p up on the week. best girls 210p+ boars 165p-180p.

Porkers sold to 199p for J&B Fentem who had boars to 172p.

Cutters sold to 201p for J&B Fentem who had others at 200p, PF+PD Parsons to 195p.

Bacon pigs sold to 225p x2 for Massie Farms who had others to 223p, 218px2, 217p, 214p, 230p. A Shinton to 218p to gross £218. PF+PD Parsons to 216p, x2, 214p, 203p, Drew Bailey to 210p. J&B Fentem to 204p. D Goldtraw to 203p. C Hine to 200p.

Heavies sold well with good pigs forward to 181p for JA&B Minshull or £211. a Shinton to 175p, D Bailey to 171p.

Cull boars to 28p.

Sows sold to 149p for a young 151kg sow from AI Grace, J&B Fentem to 65p and 53p.

A lovely run of heifers on offer at Leek, met a swift trade topping at £2720 for a 25kg heifer from Edward and Dianne Bennett of Whiston.

Close behind at £2620 was a smashing heifer from the Kennerley family at Betley who also had a second to £2420.

Every milker passed to £2100 to average an excellent £2378.

A seasonal entry after a busy breeding sale on Saturday saw a solid trade with lambs a shade sharper on the week to average 318p/kg.

Best selling to 375p/kg and plenty at 350p – 370p. Heavy lambs very good to sell, topping at £235.42 per head and multiple lots at £200 +.

Commercial lambs generally 290p – 310p depending on weight and finish.

More could be sold each week.

Note to vendors that the lightweight and under finished lambs would be better sold in the store sales.
