Market Report Tuesday 9th January

A very cold Tuesday Market but plenty of buyers braving the weather.

An excellent show of Sheep today with over a thousand head in total, seeing a top price of 320p/kg.

Smaller number of Barren Cattle on offer but seeing a sharp trade, with a top price of 160p/kg for a Holstein Cow.

Another good entry of Pigs, with 158 on offer and a top price of 206p.

141 Calves selling on a strong trade throughout, seeing a top price of £495 for a Limousin Bull.

A good entry of Dairies, including two Blue Albion Heifer Calves, topping at £205, at only three weeks old.

BARREN COWS (15);

Selling time – 10:00am

A small entry but a sharper trade with a good company of buyers around the ring.

Top price of the day was 160p/kg paid for an 835kg Holstein Cow for WG & J Clark to gross £1336.

A 675kg Holstein, from GE Brookes & Partners, exchanged hands for 152p/kg with a 755kg Friesian, from RG & AS Williamson selling at 150p/kg.

Top headage price was £1336 with others £1144.80 and £1132.50.

CLEAN CATTLE (8)

An entry, mainly of Young Bulls, for which there was strong competition with vendors being well pleased.

Top price was 246p/kg for a 530kg Bull, to gross £1303.80.

A 560kg Friesian Bull, from JE Archer & Sons, sold for 240p/kg to gross £1344 and a 495kg Bull, from the same vendor, selling for 231p/kg with a 555kg Bull at 218p/kg to gross £1209.90.

A 610kg Holstein Heifer, from R Tomkinson & Son, exchanged hands for 180p/kg.

PIGS (158);

Selling time – 9:15am

Another bumper entry of Pigs with 158 head forward.

Trade, on the whole, slightly less than previous weeks, in line with other outlets nationally. Top price 206p, distinct difference between Boars and Gilts today, with Gilts generally a 10p premium.

Porkers topped at 182p from J&B Fentem.

Cutting Pigs sold to 200p, from J&B Fentem, who sold others to 199p, 185p, 180p x 2. S Bailey sold Boars to 178p, and RA Hughes had Boars to 178p.

Bacon Pigs sold to 206p x 2 from Massie Farms, who sold others to 205p x 3, 204p x 5 and 200p. JG Belfield sold Pigs to 200p and 198p. B Palfreyman sold to 198p.

More heavy pigs about, top price 160p for 115kg pigs from MR Banham, who sold others to 159p and 151p.

JG Belfield sold pigs to 156p and 152p for 118kg pigs.

25 Dairy Cattle including two Dairy Heifer Calves.

A good entry for a January Tuesday but quality very mixed.

Two smart Blue Albion Heifer Calves started the day for Richard Toon to a top of £205 at three weeks of age.

No milky strong cows this week with second type Heifers around the £1400 mark.

An entry of Flekvieh Heifers, from Derbyshire vendor A D Thompson, topped at £1440 with Montbeliarde to £1370.

Friesian type Heifers, from Leicestershire vendors the Kirby Family, to £1320.

Next week is the first Pedigree Dairy Sale for 2024

A good seasonal entry, selling on a fast trade, being better than anticipated. A more mixed show of quality overall but all sorts well bid for.

Best quality Lambs a good trade regardless of weight. Best heavy weight Lambs grossing at £162.80 and a number of pens at £150+.

Overall average, a very pleasing 281p/kg.

More Hogget’s could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage!

A good start to the New Year with 141 Calves penned and sold with the general quality not at it’s best but trade strong throughout.

42 CONTINENTAL BULLS

Trade good throughout with the best in the high £300’s but plenty of smaller sorts about. A suckler bred Limousin Steer (36 days) topped at £490 with Limousin X at
£398. Twelve best over £310, medium £180-£250 with a few smaller or plainer bred calves under £150.
