Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report 17th September

Store Lambs (4,202);
Trade very similar to the last sale with several buyers still short of fodder to run lambs for a longer period.

Well meated, strong lambs were bid for keenly with Suffolk ewe lambs topping at £112 from P & M Hayward & son, Chapel en le Firth with Phillip Hooley receiving £111 for a pen of Suffolk ewe lambs and £105 for a second pen.

A pen of Suffolk ewe lambs from M & D Barber exchanged hands for £108. Mixed Suffolks sold up to £85 from Phillip Hooley and £84 from P & M Hayward & Son.

Texel ewe lambs sold up to £99 for a lovely pen from PJ, JA & LB Wain, Upper Hulme with mixed Texel lambs to £95 from Josh Wright, Hartington; £93 for G A Mallinson, Reapsmoor; £92.50 for Chris Joyce, Thorncliffe & many other pens of strong lambs in excess of £80.

Beltex lambs sold up to £79.50 for N & AG Eardley of Macclesfield. Mule wethers up to £76.50 for R & L White, Turnditch.

The average came to £70.38 overall.

Ewe Lambs (1390);
An excellent trade for ewe lambs this week with numerous buyers, old and new around the ring. A lovely entry for the Show & Sale, kindly judged by Frank Rushton, and the show results are given below.

Away from the Show winners, a single Pedigree Beltex realsied £200 for Sam Hall, Longnor, and a single Texel at £180 for M Boulton, Bramshall. Texel ewe lambs topped at £150 for J L Morris, Cresswell, £138 for S Edge, Ballidon; £132 for J Fox, Barthomley; £132 for Alan Hayes, Alstonefield; £29 for R M Hadfield Ltd, Castleton and many other Texels generally £105 – £125.

Mule Ewe Lambs topped at £145 for the show winners from Mycock & Bright, Buxton; two pens at £136 and a further £132 and £130 for B J Allen, Scalford; £132 & £126 for Mycock & Bright.

Cheviot x ewe lambs sold up to £134 for the prize winners from John Kirkham, Hartington, and Suffolks to £116 for M J Burnett.

Overall average of £98.40.

Shearlings (854);
A good entry sold up to £195 for a pair of Pedigree Cheviots from Clive Hidderley, Ipstones. Texel x shearlings sold well, topping at £172 for E Morten & Sons, Barmoor Clough who sold others at £168; £165; £162; £160 & £155. Other Texels to £168 for C Hidderley; £160 & £155 for S R Prince, Uttoxeter.

Mule shearlings sold up to £166 for G L Staley & Son, Cold Eaton who sold a further pen for £162 and £160 for a pen from RF & JP Critchlow.

Welsh Mules to £148 & £146 for P H Williams, Tea and Suffolks to £144 for J P Walker, Longford.

Overall average of £139.04 for shearlings.

Ewes (142);
A small entry sold up to £130 for full mouth Texel’s from W F Baugh, Ashton under Lyme, with a pair of Pedigree two shear ewes at £126 for M Boulton, and £121 for full mouth Texel ewes from Ben Ratcliffe, Calton.

A pen of 4 Tooth – full mouth Mule ewes made £98 for Grigg Farms, Rainow and also for a pen of full mouth Mules from A L Turnock & Sons, Wincle.

One crop Jacob ewes sold for £88 from K Moss, Cold Eaton.
