Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report 20th September

A total entry of 7,934 Store Lambs and Breeding Sheep

4,607 Store Lambs
A good show of lambs with a high proportion of well-shaped lambs with a good strong trade throughout and a ring full of buyers. There were a number of Blue Tongue vaccinated store lambs on offer with a Welsh buyer in attendance keen to acquire vaccinated stock.

Suffolk ewe lambs sold up to £164 from P & M Hayward & Son of Chapel en le Frith with another pen at £158. Suffolk mixed lambs from A & A Spooner of Macclesfield realised £139 with a pen from D W Fox of Buxton at £135. Other pens of Suffolk achieved £130 and above to average £116.53 per head.

Texel lambs topped at £139 from J W Bailey of Congleton, £134 for the Wain family of Upper Hulme, £133 from Joe Austin of Parwich, £133 from P & Hayward of Chapel en le Frith, £132 from P & JS Rushton of Caldon and £131 from J Gibbs of Hartington to average £105.06 per head.

Dutch Spotted lambs avhieved up to £121.50 from B Thornley of Snelston to average £108.28.

Blue tongue vaccinated Oxford lambs from R & m Phillips of Ladmanlow were well sold at £115 and £114. Another pen of Oxford X from M & L Agriculture Ltd of Quarndon achieved £115 to average £103.05 per head.

Beltex lambs up to £112 from GA & SM Wainwright & Sons of Bamford to average £108.46 per head.

Dorset lambs achieved up to £122 from J Wild of Ible, Jacobs up to £101 from M E Cooper of Midddleton.

Mule wethers were in demand and achieved up to £114 from GA & SM Wainwright & Sons of Bamford, £110 from A & J Henshaw of Buxton and £108 from Bradley Evans of Chebsey to average £85.15.

Cheviot lambs from David Torr of Ilam topped at £118 and £104 from I J Burton of Ashbourne.

Overall average £102.29.

Breeding Sheep
Ewe Lambs (2302) – Average £128.74
A very good turnout of lambs for this years show and sale, with plenty of strong well-bred lambs presented for the judge, Mike Turner of Grindon, to award the prizes.

Top price of the day was for Texel lambs at £308 for DAJ Burton of Ipstones Edge. There was a large entry of Texel’s with the best selling well on the day. First prize went to Danny Holland of Blore with his lambs topping at £185 & £160 twice. Sam Edge, Ballidon sold Texel’s to £172 twice, £165 for Chris Neeham, Foxt and £160 for Ian Gregory, £158 & £155 for Texels from HG Nutter, Grindon, and £152 for Andrew Carr & family, Waterfall.

Plenty of Mule ewe lambs on offer, with the first prize awarded to Rob & Laura White, Shottle which sold for £205, and they sold others at £155. Second prize went to Mycock & Bright, Buxton which sold for £192 who also sold others for £175, £168, £150 and £145. J Burrows, Macclesfield Forest sold Mules to £160 & £148.

Suffolk ewe lambs from Meg Hallam, Warslow sold for £185. First prize Suffolk lambs were awarded to Philip Heath, Bradnop which sold for £170 to the judge with second prize awarded to Ian Gregory, Peak Forest which also sold for £170, and sold others at £160.

A pair of Dutch Spotted ewe lambs sold for £180 from J Hall, Sutton on the Hill. Cheviot ewe lambs topped at £160 twice for D & CJ Redfern, Church Broughton with Cheviot Mule lambs at £138 twice for J F Kirkham, Hartington.

Shearlings (674) – Average £190.83
A smaller entry to last sale and trade remains strong, with a top price of £265 for Texels from A Hayes, Cromford with other Texels to £250 for E Morten & Sons, Barmoor Clough who sold other pens for £235, £230 and £200. P H Williams, Tean sold a pen of Texels for £235.

Mules sold up to £250 for P H Williams, Tean and sold other pens for £240, £230 & £220. A pen from A Hayes, Cromford sold for £225 and £220 and Mules from W Allen, Butterton sold for £205 twice, and £205 for SP Smith & Sons, Wymeswold.

A pen of Cheviot shearlings sold for £190 from J J Turner, Okeover and a pen of Mashams at £190 for GA & SM Wainwright, Bamford.

Ewes (351) – Average £144.77
Ewes today sold to £250 for a pen of 1-2 crop Texel’s from J Naylor, Hulme End, with other Texels to £190 for 2 shear ewes from N Belfield, Wildboarclough who sold similar to £160. A pair sold at £185 for KA & KJ Shelley, Blythe Bridge who sold others at £175. A pen of 1-3 crop ewes sold for £162 from G Ardern, Ashover who had other pens at £155 twice. £160 for a pen of 1-2 crop ewes from A & A Smith Farms, Hilderstone.

Suffolks sold up to £220, £168 and £152 from F & M Bickerton & Sons, Middlewich. Dutch Spotted ewes sold to £175 from P & NJ Ashworth, Leigh.

Mule ewes sold up to £152 for 1-2 crop ewes from Brooklyn Farming Ltd and £150 for Mules from W K Hurley, Macclesfield.
