9,223 Store & Breeding Sheep were on offer on Saturday with the largest entry of Store Lambs of the season so far with 6,865 exchanging hands and a very similar trade to a fortnight ago with a good company of buyers in attendance.
Store Lambs
The top price in the store lambs’ section was £145 achieved for Texel lambs for Messrs K Kirkham & Bourne from Werrington with £144 for Suffolk ewe lambs from Messrs Hayward of Chapel en le Frith with another pair of ewe lambs from the same vendor at £132.
Other Texel mixed lambs from B & K Stevenson of Quarndon, Derby topped at £130 with a pen from Steven Beresford of Wildboarclough at £129 and Suffolk lambs from W & N Sherratt of Hartington at £122.
Several other pens of Texel Lambs sold for around £120/head to produce an average for Texels of £93.25 including a number of smaller sorts, also, a number of pens of Suffolk sold at around £100 with an average of £95.47.
Beltex lambs from Messrs Eardley of Macclesfield sold well up to £113.50 with Bleu De Maine lambs from W & N Sherratt of Hartington at £110.50, Oxford lambs, from John Barber of Quarnford, sold at £108 with R & M Phillips & Sons of Buxton having pens to £102.
Gritstone lambs from SA Garlick Ltd of Buxton topped at £92, Zwartble lambs, from W & N Sherratt of Hartington, at £97 with Mule wether lambs from Waller Farms of Sutton up to £99 and other Mule wethers from Graham Sidebottom of Marple at £94, £89 and £88 (twice).
Overall average achieved for store lambs was £90.05.
Ewe Lambs
There were 841 breeding ewe lambs on offer seeing a top price of £200 paid for Bleu Texel ewe lambs from Anne Porter of Cauldon Lowe with Texel ewe lambs from J B Rowlinson & Son of Ramshorn at £158 and another pen of Texel ewe lambs from S & D Fearn of Wardlow Miers at £155.
Mule ewe lambs from J Burrows of Walkers Barn, sold for £150 (twice) with others at £148.
Suffolk ewe lambs from J Morris of Mold sold up to £150 with Herdwick ewe lambs from M Bracegirdle at £120 and Jacob ewe lambs from John Stubbs of Ashbourne at £115.
The average for ewe lambs was £117.11
Shearlings
There were 648 shearlings on offer with a top price of the day being £250 for a pen of Blue Texel shearlings form J Burrows of Walkers Barn with Texel shealings from E W Moss & Sons of Endon at £220 and £215. Another pen of Texels from E Morten & Sons of Barmoor Clough realised £215 with a number of others at around £200.
Mule shearlings form Phillip Williams of Tean sold up to £210 (twice) with Cheviot shearlings from E Morten & Sons of Barmoor Clough at £200 (twice).
Suffolk shearlings from the Hodgson family of Wormhill sold up to £165 with the average for shearlings being £171.62.
Ewes
There were 864 Breeding Ewes on offer which achieved up to £170 for a pen of Texel correct ewes form George Hicklin & Family of Onecote with other Texels from S K Davies of Sutton at £150 and Mule correct ewes from J&D Skidmore of Chelmorton at £150 (twice).
A pair of Cheviot correct ewes from SE Harrison of Thorpe sold for £142 with a pair of Lleyn ewes from the same vendor also realising £142.
The average for breeding ewes was £113.12 with a number of plainer ewes being sold for further feeding.
