Market Report Tuesday 27th January

A very wet Tuesday market and a few less numbers about in all sections. A good demand for barren cattle with top prices of 288p/kg and £2025.10/head.

Just short of 1,000 sheep on offer with hoggs to 378p/kg or £211.20/head and ewes to £280

Calves topping at £735 for Blue bulls and £590 for Blue heifers

BARREN COWS

Despite the wet weather, barrens were in strong demand, topping at 288p/kg for a Holstein cow weighing 615kg to gross at £1771.20 for P & M Critchlow of Ashbourne.

A Blonde cow weighing 675kg closely followed at 286p/kg to gross at £1930.50 for J Gilman & Partners of Bosley.

A Shorthorn cow weighing 770kg sold to 263p/kg to gross £2025.10 being the top headage price of the day for D & J Moseley Ltd of Caverswall.

161 pigs seen and sold today, despite falling deadweight prices the live market system continues to provide. a good show of pigs with those quality fat pigs in demand, rougher sorts harder to sell. fats sold to 227p or £225.75

Porkers sold to 178p for RA Hughes who had others at 164p. B Barlow to 160p.

Cutters sold to 202p for G Weston, W Gregson had boars to 179p. DB Goldstraw to 178p, B Barlow to 175p. B Minshull to 175p.

Bacon pigs met a strong demand selling to 227p for Massie Farms who had others to 226px3, 225p, 220p, 215p, 214px2. B Minshull to 222p. PF+PD Parsons to 220p, 210p, 206p. GR Weston to 218p. B Barlow to 212p. J&B Fentem to 208p. C Hine 204p.

Heavies sold to a strong trade topping at 215p for 105kg gilts from PF+PD Parsons, S Bailey to 196p, J&B Fentem to 185p, 167p, 165p. P Hine to 140p.

A lovely run of five milkers from the Broomhouse Herd of Messrs Easom met a strong trade with others from the same home to £2280 and £2200 with all five averaging £2368.

Some lovely Red & White youngstock from Messrs Foster of Belper sold to £710 to give an overall average of £599.17.

HOGGS (752)
A typical January day, both in terms of weather and demand, with both local and national wholesalers reporting slow demand. This resulted in a bit of a come down from last weeks trade but still a full clearance can be reported.

Best butchers’ lambs selling to 378p/kg and a few other specials at 350p/kg and better., but generally best lambs 340p – 350p/kg for handy weights at 320p – 340p/kg for 45kg and over.

Heavy lambs making up over 60% of the entry and these are proving harder to place nationally, but our result for these would be on par or better to average 310p/kg for heavies and 289p/kg for overweights.

Best big lambs still grossing £211.20 for an outstanding pen from David and Joe Lovatt of Rushton.

Overall average of 323p/kg or £145/head.

A few less ewes sold to a solid trade, similar to last week. Best continental in strong demand, half bred and mules still a strong trade but not as dear as we have seen them in previous weeks. Overall, a good show of ewes forward with plenty of fed strong ewes in the entry. Top price twice at £280 for R&S Bailey and R Darlington.

A weather affected entry this Tuesday but what we lacked in quantity we made up for with trade with some marvellous prices throughout.
