Market Report 12th July

A hot Tuesday sale and many farmers in the harvest had an impact on numbers. Lambs continue to sell well and topped at 328p/kg or £177.28 per head with cull ewes to £142. Many more required next week!

A small entry of Dairies topped at £1950 for a Dairy Shorthorn heifer. Next week is pedigree week so look out for the catalogue online.

Barrens sold on a similar trade, selling up to 187p/kg or £1536 with an average of 152.95p/kg.

A strong trade for fat pigs this week with the best cutters to 176p/kg with numerous pens 155p/kg and above.

Calves topped the day at £375 for a British Blue bull with heifers up to £288.

A good trade again and some good quality cattle forward topping the day at 187p/kg for a 710kg Hereford from GW & SM Pattinson, Weaver who also sold a 735kg Angus for 185p/kg and a 640kg Limousin for 180p/kg. A 610kg Charolais achieved 186p/kg for S Kidd Farmers, Longnor and a 550kg British Blue cow made 179p/kg for Dan Beswick, Ipstones.

Overall average of 152.95p/kg or £1040 per head.

Top headage price of £1536 for a 960kg Norwegian Red from DJ & KL Leadbetter, with other Holsteins at £1513.75, £1435 and £1392; Angus’ to £1359.75.

A small entry and no best quality. Black & white bulls sold well up to 204p/kg for a 640kg Friesian from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton who sold others at 198p/kg, 196p/kg and 193p/kg.

Despite a distinct shortage of quality in the dairy shed on Tuesday trade we extremely swift for all qualities with a smashing Dairy Shorthorn from Shirley Kirkham topping the day at £1950.

Numerous second quality heifers were in that £1800+ mark.

We have a superb entry already of almost 50 Milkers for next week Pedigree Sale and we then move swiftly into a succession of herd dispersals (See adverts below) with more being booked this week.

Another good trade for pigs throughout the entry with porkers selling up to 155p/kg for a 75kg pig from S J Booth, Lymm, with 148p/kg for 71kg pigs from P J Barker, and 142p/kg for a 70kg pig from B Minshull.

Cutters topped the day at 176p/kg for 85kg pigs from Massie Farms who also others at 174pkg, 170p/kg and 168p/kg. 174p/kg for a pair of 82kg pigs from PF & PD parsons, Whitchurch and 170p/kg for 77kg pigs from P J Barker.

Massie Farms also sold bacon pigs up to 170p/kg twice, with 167p/kg achieved for 90kg pigs from the Parsons, and 160p for 95kg pig and 158p/kg for 100kg pigs, both from J & B Fentem. Plenty of pens 150p and above.

Heavies topped at 166p/kg for a 105kg pig from J & B Fentem with a 110kg pig at 154p/kg for P J Saunders.

Cull sows sold up to 64p/kg for a run of sows from the same home.

A reasonable entry given the weather and the fall in trade due to the festival met a very competitive trade with both new and returning orders.

The best lambs were well bid for throughout, topping at 328p/kg or £177.28. Plenty of better lambs at 310p and better, and more could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

Heavy weights also in demand with 45kg plus averaging £145/head. Many more of these required.

Overall average at 294p/kg.

Many more could have been sold on a solid trade albeit less than previous weeks. Best ewes to £142, although no best Texel’s available.

Mules to £108. Overall average at £103/head for a very mixed sample.

A lighter show on a hot day in Leek but the buyers came and a solid, if not spectacular price for the calves.

A good trade for the bulls but buyers are price conscious and smaller calves are harder to sell. Best Blue topped at £375 with the top 10 over £300.

27 Continental Heifers
Same story as the bulls. I accept that milk is a good price at present but it does pay dividends to do you calves to get the best prices. 10 best over £200 with the best 5 over £250 and a top of £288 for a smart Blue from Giles Clark, Bradnop.

Better sold for all, particularly the bottom end. A smart Monty bull made £245 for Jim Hudson, with Friesians to £100. Mediums £60 – £80 with smaller bulls generally over £30.
