A busy Tuesday sale saw the monthly Pedigree Dairy Sale attract a good crowd of buyers and a fantastic trade with the best fresh cows to £2580 & £2540.
An excellent show of lambs this week and good to see more numbers coming forward. The best lambs sold very well, with a top price of 282p/kg and £152.69 per head. Cull ewes a little less but continue to sell to a competitive trade up to £159 per head.
Similar numbers of barren cows forward, topping at 218p/kg for Limousin’s and Friesians to 197p/kg.
A strong demand for fat pigs, with prices up on the week. Porkers topped the day at 197p/kg, and numerous pens across the weights 180p/kg and better.
A brisk trade for calves, and similar numbers forward with bulls up to £355 and heifers to £345.

An entry of black & white bulls sold up to 199p/kg for a 580kg Friesian from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton, who also sold a 580kg Friesian at 197p/kg; 565kg Friesian at 195p/kg and a 565kg Friesian at 194p/kg.

A very good trade this week for the Pedigree Dairy sale with 50 head stalled and nearly all of them fresh calved cows & heifers. The best quality cattle are a remarkable trade at present with the 5 best over £2,400. The second quality heifers look better values between £1500 – £1800, generally good heifers but lacking the condition and milk of the higher prices.
Getting the top price today was a trio from the Meldamor herd of the Shepherd family at Bakewell. They sold 2 cows at £2580 & £2500 with their heifer selling for £2400. Brian Needham, Heaton also sold 3 today with his top heifers achieving £2540 and £2340 with his second calf cow making £2400. Other good heifers sold over £2000.

An even better trade for fat pigs this week with averages up across the board. Porkers topped the day at 197p/kg for 72kg pigs from P J Barker, Shepshed. Other porkers to 178p/kg for 63kg pigs from A Worth, Marton and 166p/kg for a 63kg pig from J Wheawall, Leigh and 166p/kg for 60kg pigs from D H Poulson, Llangadog.
Cutters topped at 193p/kg for 83kg pigs from Massie Farms who sold others at 191p/kg, 190p/kg and 182p/kg. 184p/kg was achieved 4 times for pigs from J & B Fentem & PF & PD Parsons.
Bacon pigs sold up to 196p/kg for 88kg pigs from P J Barker, Shepshed with 186p/kg for 88kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who sold 95kg pigs at 184p/kg. Massie Farms sold bacon pigs to 186p/kg, 182p/kg, 181p/kg & 180p/kg.
Heavy pigs sold up to 178p/kg for a 116kg pig from J & B Fentem; 170p/kg for a 137kg pig from D H Poulson and 166p/kg for 107kg pigs from J & B Fentem.
Just one sow sold a 78p/kg for a 151kg sow from Bernard Minshull. Also, a pen of 10 25kg weaners sold for £35 each from Alan Worth.

LAMBS (1139);
A pleasing entry forward was received well by our usual congregation of buyers who ensured competitive bidding throughout. Some lambs forward were lacking the required finish and a number went for further feeding but still experienced good bidding throughout.
Overall average at 232p/kg which is back on last week but inline with other outlets and pleasing for the goods on offer.
Some very well fed lambs forward again attracting a premium, topping at 282p/kg or £152.69. Many more big lambs required each week to meet the strong demand from a number of buyers. Heavy lambs today averaged £116/head.
