Market Report 16th March

A very busy day at Leek, hosting the monthly Pedigree Dairy Sale with some very good quality cattle forward selling up to £2290 for heifers and cows to £2100 with yearlings selling on an excellent enquiry selling to £1090.

A super trade for barren cattle again this Tuesday and more on offer, selling up to 160p/kg and £1312.50. More cattle required for the demand on offer!

Hogg’s still continue to sell on a unreal trade, with the SQQ average at 296.5p/kg and up to 355p/kg for the best quality sorts and £165.26 per head! Culls ewes also just as strong, albeit a bit less than last week up to £152.
Calves just as dear as they have been with many buyers looking to stock up, with bulls selling to £378 and heifers to £335.
A good entry of pigs sold on a solid trade, with bacon pigs to 150p/kg twice.

Another smashing trade for all barren cattle this Tuesday with buyers forward looking for numbers, and great to see a good turnout of stock from vendors.
Top price of 160p/kg for a 755kg Aberdeen Angus cow from P & D Smallwood, Middlewich who sold another at 156p/kg for a 730kg Aberdeen Angus cow. Blonde’s topped at 150p/kg for a 620kg cow from James Gilman, Bosley.
Black & white’s sold up to 151p/kg for a 735kg Holstein from T Swinson & Partners, Caverswall and 150p/kg for a 875kg Holstein from ET Hanson & Sons, Alford.

Two black & white bulls sold at 167p/kg for a 540kg Friesian and a 530kg Friesian at 165p/kg, both from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

Another good entry and trade similar to last week. Cutting pigs up to 138p/kg three times for a pair of 81kg pigs, 79kg pigs and 84kg pigs from J & B Fentem.
Bacon pigs sold up to 150p/kg twice for 99kg and 94kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch with 148p/kg paid for 92kg pigs from David Goldstraw, with the Fentem family selling bacon pigs at 140p/kg three times, and 136p/kg. a pair of 96kg pigs realised 1333p/kg for Bernard Minshull.
Heavy pigs sold up to 136p/kg for a 105kg pig from Bernard Minshull, Buxton, with 126p/kg for a pair of 107kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons who also sold a pair of 109kg pigs at 120p/kg, with a 111kg pig at 120p/kg for C & R Holtom.
Cull sows topped at 73p/kg for a 166kg sow from C & R Holtom, Coventry, with P J Barker selling three sows (260kg, 264kg & 245kg) all at 68p/kg and a 245kg sow at 66p/kg.

A tremendously busy day in the dairy shed saw a total entry of 138 which comprised 86 Milkers, 50 Youngstock together with 2 Stock Bulls.

Numerous milkers passed the £2000 mark with an exceptional heifer from Andrew & Joanna Bunting of Bakewell topping the day at £2290. Hot in pursuit were Edward & Dianne Bennett of Whiston with their Seagull- Bay MVP daughter at £2240. John Stone of Onecote had a lovely run of 7 heifers in that topped at £2030 to average £1960. Cows topped at £2100 for a second calver from Messrs Palfreyman of Flagg.

British Friesians from Stephen Seabridge of Stone reached £1890 with a Jersey second calver from Messrs Phillips of Winkhill to £1410.

The trade continued within the commercial section which saw Malcom Trevor-Jones of Oswestry top with a heifer at £2180 with a second to £2080. He also saw his Norwegian Red X second calver reach £1960. Other heifers from Andrew Mills of Leicester and Messrs Bennett of Hope Valley at £2080 and £2000 respectively. Cows topped at £1970 for a third calver from Messrs Clark of Bradnop.
The special entry of youngstock from the Havendale Herd of Messrs Flower met a scorching trade which saw yearlings to £1090, 8 month old heifers to £890 and 3 months to £590.

Young calves were much sought after with a run of Friesian types from David Wrench of Henbury to £280.

Two Simmental Stock Bulls 4 year and 27 months old sold well to £2050 and £1840.

Next week we have the Special Entry of Montbeliarde X Youngstock from the Sharman family. Some real quality, these are really well grown and are certainly worth a look.

A modest entry, as expected for the time of year saw another very fast trade for all types.

could have been sold to vendors advantage.

Another buoyant trade, albeit perhaps slightly back from last weeks flyer. Nevertheless, best Texel’s to £152, best Mules to £108 and best Suffolks to £132.
Overall average £91/head. More could be sold each week to the vendors advantage!

Very very dear again with seasonal buyers fighting hard to secure numbers. Two super Blues from Andrew Hulme made £335 and £315 with posh fresh Blondes at £290 from Messrs Gilman, Buglawton. 10 Best over £230; mediums £190 – £220 with a few smalls under £180.

Best bulls look best sold with a smart Hereford to £314 for K W Powell with other good bulls over £250. Best of the heifers was a Hereford at £215 from Pete Beswick with only some spring calving heifers under £100.

Best at £122 for Jim Hudson with others at £110 and Brown Swiss at £118.

17 Reared Calves from Three Vendors
A bunch of 4 Limousin heifers sold at £500 from Ian Gregson, Hanbury. Hereford bulls sold to £385 and heifers to £375 (both 6 mths) from Messrs Gleave, Holmes Chapel.
