Market Report 17th August

With the weather taking a turn, its feeling more like winter. Many farmers bringing stock this Tuesday and taking advantage of the trade on offer at Leek.

The Dairy Shed saw a tremendous trade for the Monthly Pedigree Sale with 8 over £2000 to top at £2240 for a second calver and heifers to £2200.

A good turnout of sheep with 823 Lambs and 205 Ewes presented met a solid trade, selling up to 289p/kg and £137.42 for lambs with best ewes to £169. More sheep required week on week to keep up with the demand!!

A shortage of barren cattle this Tuesday, but again, what a solid trade with prices getting better and better topping at 167p/kg or £1121.80.

Pigs continue to be a little easier on the week, and better quality always selling at a premium to top at 139p/kg for Bacon pigs.

With Store cattle trade on the up, so are calves and a good entry saw an excellent enquiry seeing Blue bull calves to £395 and heifers to £312.

A real shortage of cattle this Tuesday but trade gets better and better, averaging at 134.87p/kg to top at 167p/kg for a 590kg Simmental cow from B J Howson, Chelford, with a 575kg Simmental at 148p/kg for W E Fearn, Buxton.

Montbeliarde’s sold up to 149p/kg for a 655kg cow from B & B Partners, and a 680kg Monty at 148p/kg for A C Mycock, Oulton.

Black & Whites topped at 146p/kg for a 740kg Dairy Shorthorn from BJ & A Beech, Sutton, with a 790kg and 730kg Friesians both at 142p/kg for DR & A Shuker, Bosley.

Top headage price of £1121.80 & £1036.60 for Friesians from DR & A Shuker, with Dairy Shorthorns to £1080.40 and Montbeliarde’s at £1006.40. Simmentals topped at £985.30.

Two overage Charolais steers sold well up to 187p/kg twice for 655kg and 665kg steers.

A small entry and no smart butchers cattle on offer. Top price of 187p/kg for a 495kg Limousin heifer from Ian Gregson, Hanbury, with a 520kg Limousin steer at 185p/kg and Hereford steers at 178p/kg and 169p/kg for James Forrester.

Tremendous Trade at Pedigree Sale

Plenty of buyers in attendance on Tuesday no doubt drawn by the choice on offer saw a more bouncy trade throughout particularly for the best.

Regular vendors Messrs Easom of Oakerthorpe, known for showing quality did not disappoint with a super run of 7 cows and heifers. 5 of the 7 passed £2000 topping at £2240 for a second calver giving 42kg to Messrs Swindells of Chelmorton. Close behind from the same home at £2220 was a third calver purchased by Messrs Bennett of Woodseaves who also went on to take a second calver at £2200 and a heifer at £2160.

Michael Wainwright of Buxton saw one of his heifers reach £2200 to Andrew Hulme of Basford. Numerous heifers were in that £1800-£2000 mark.

Stock Bulls sold really well. An 18 month old Black and White bull from the Rhapsody family from Messrs Cotton reached £2200 with a pedigree Limousin Bull from Messrs Brunt making £2060.

A story of trade being up and down, with price for the quality types improving but the lesser quality being less in price.

Cutting pigs sold to 128p/kg for a trio of 78kg pigs from J & B Fentem, Alsop and also 128p/kg for a 82kg pig from Steve Bailey. A trio of 76kg pigs made 107p/kg for AD & K Potts, Astbury and 106p/kg for 80kg pigs from M R Banham.

Bacon pigs sold on the best trade up to 139p/kg for 94kg pigs from David Goldstraw who also sold 97kg pigs at 131p/kg. Fentems sold bacon pigs at 125p/kg for 86kg and 88kg pigs and 119p/kg twice for PF & PD Parsons.

Heavy pigs topped at 116p/kg for a 118kg pig from Dave Goldstraw, and 106kg pigs at 105p/kg for Graham Belfield.

A few less Sows in topping at 64p/kg for a 272kg sow from Ray Rowlinson, with a 238kg sow at 61p/kg for J Davenport, Gawsworth and two sows at 50p/kg for P J Saunders.

A pen of weaners from Steve Proctor, Longnor sold well at £31/head.

Nice to have consistent numbers at over 800 but many more could have been sold today to the vendors advantage with trad very firm from start to finish!! Best shaped and best meated lambs in short supply and customers needing these every week! Overall average of 245p/kg.

Best lambs raced away to 289p/kg and numerous pens at 270p and better. Better lambs attracting a real premium regardless of weight.

Best big lambs selling away to 281p/kg or £137.42 per head. More big weight lambs could be sold every week!

MORE REQUIRED!! A very strong trade for a mixed sample. Best Texel’s selling to £169 from A P Williams, Eccleshall and the best 10 lots averaging £149/head. Best Mules to £122 and anything half meated at £100 Plus.

The average at £88/head reflects the very mixed sample, including lean Swales, Herdwicks and Soay’s.

Best Rams to £160 for Texel’s.

Another very good line up of calves with a strong ring of buyers led to a solid trade throughout.

Stronger money with extra buyers at the ringside. 14 best bulls topped £300 with a high of £395 for an exceptional British Blue (3 weeks) from G Matkin & Sons, Idridgehay, just pipping John Hawkins at £392. Medium bulls £240 – £280 with smaller sorts around £200.
