Market Report 24th November

Dairies continue to sell on a fast trade, with the whole entry of 58 milkers averaging £1704, and topping at £2340 for an exceptional heifer from the Johnson family, Longnor and plenty more quality forward.
Lambs sold on a similar trade and a mixed entry in terms of quality with the best quality topping at 240p/kg or £122.96 and cull ewes a solid trade topping at £131.
More barren cattle about selling on a decent trade up to 180p/kg or £1134/head averaging 99p/kg. S small selection of clean topped at 205p/kg for a Limousin bull.
A large entry of fat pigs this Tuesday and a strong trade for all, topping the day at 144p/kg for bacon pigs from the Fentem family.
Calves dearer than ever this Tuesday with less about and a wide range of buyers looking to secure stock. Top prices over £400 up to £440 for a British Blue bull calf and £312 for heifers. Many more calves required!

Barren Cows (58);

Good to see more cattle forward this Tuesday selling on a solid trade, with a some good quality sorts about topping at 180p/kg for an overage 630kg Simmental heifer, with 154p/kg achieved for a 705kg Swedish Red cow from TD & S Prince, Ilam.
Other Simmentals sold up to 146p/kg for a 775kg cow with black & whites to 144p/kg for a 675kg Holstein from PW Godber, who also sold a 730kg Holstein to realise 140p/kg.

Top headage price of £1134 and £1131.50 for the two Simmentals, with Holsteins to £1093.95 and Swedish Red to £1085.70.
One overage Norwegian Red steer weighing 625kg realised 134p/kg from EM & COP Naden, Cheddleton.

Clean Cattle;

Selling time – 10:45am approx.

A small selection today, selling to 205p/kg for a 575kg Limousin bull from C H Barnsley, Morridge.
Steers sold to 184p/kg for a 485kg Charolais and a 615kg Hereford steer realised 178p/kg for TD & S Prince, Ilam and a 450kg Welsh Black steer made 165p/kg.
Heifers topped at 170p/kg for a 420kg Angus and 159p/kg for a 595kg Simmental from the Carnwell family, Kingsley.
Top headage price of £1178.75 for bulls, £1094.70 for steers and £946.05 for heifers.

Dairies (58);

A superb entry of 58 dairies saw 30 in excess of £1800 the entire entry average £1704 with a top of £2340.
Taking the honours was an exceptional heifer from the Johnson brothers of Longnor who showed a total of 8. They also had a second to £2280 with all 8 averaging a superb £2017.
Brian Needham of Rushton had an exceptional trade for his four heifers and two second calves. The heifers reached £2170, with a second to £2120 and cows to £2040. His entry of 6 averaged £2037.
Two lovely British Friesian cows, both third calvers from Gordon & Barbara Cresswell of Atlow reached £2000 and £1940.
Other British Friesians cows reached £1930 from John Kirby of Oakham, with a Shorthorn X heifer from Messrs Howe of Litton reaching £1910.
In-calf heifers from Freeford Farms reached £1500.

A similar trade to last sale with more about this Tuesday and a couple of more orders to fulfil.

Pork pigs topped at 136p/kg for 75kg pigs from J G Belfield, Sheen and 74kg pigs to 118p/kg for J & B Fentem, Alsop en le Dale.
Cutting pigs topped at 136p/kg for 83kg pigs from Bernard Minshull, Buxton, with others at 127p/kg for 84kg pigs from J & B Fentem who also sold cutters at 120p/kg, 118p/kg, 108p/kg and 104p/kg.

Bacon pigs sold up to 144p/kg for 104kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with 104kg pigs at 138p/kg for J G Belfield, Sheen, who also sold 95kg pigs at 137p/kg and 137p/kg also achieved for 101kg pigs from R T Wilson, Oldham, and D J Pope, Thame sold bacon pigs at 136p/kg and 134p/kg.
Heavy pigs sold up to 136p/kg for a pair of 108kg pigs from D J Pope, Thame and 134p/kg for 107kg pigs from R T Wilson, Oldham. J G Belfield sold 141kg pigs at 130p/kg, and 129p/kg achieved for 108kg pigs from David Goldstraw, Meerbrook.

More cull sows about this Tuesday, topping at 94p/kg for a 219kg sow from P J Barker, Charnwood with a run of sows from A Scott, Knutsford realising 88p/kg, 84p/kg, 83p/kg, 82p/kg and 78p/kg with a 234kg sow at 79p/kg for Rosie Watson.
Two lots of weaners selling to £35 and £24.

A seasonal entry sold on a very good trade for the meated types, but a high number of light weight, under finished lambs which could have made £10/head more on a store lamb sale.

Best sorts topped at 240p and numerous pens at 225p and above, including heavy lambs which were well bid for and grossed at £122.96 for an exceptional pen from David Goldstraw of Meerbrook.

Overall average 203p/kg but taking the bottom 10% out produces an average of 210p/kg which is a better reflection of the trade.

Less about sold on a solid trade throughout. Best Texel’s to £131/head. Good fleshed, but not fat, very good to sell and plenty more could have been sold to the vendors advantage with 6 buyers battling to secure stock.

One of the best trades experienced for a very long while with a packed ring of buyers all looking to purchase calves on the back of the recorded beef trade that we currently have. Many many more calves needed to satisfy demand.

Quite unbelievable the level of trade at present with the top 9 over £360 including a trio over £400 to a top of £440 for the Cotton family of Tea with other Blue at £435 off Messrs Hulme, Basford and £400 off Messrs Handford, Birch Vale. 11 mediums £255 to £325 with a few smaller sorts generally over £200.
