Market Report 26th October

A busy Tuesday market with the Dispersal on behalf of D N Carter & Co, Willoughby, Rugby, which met a large crowd of buyers with a top price of £2520 and 16 over £2000.

Another good show of butchers lambs this week with over 1000 forward selling on a solid trade up to 278p/kg or £136.80. Cull ewes topped at £168.

Similar numbers of barrens selling on a decent trade to 144p/kg for a Longhorn. Clean topped at 213p/kg for a 610kg Angus steer.

More pigs about and a strong trade, especially for cutting pigs. Top price of 160p/kg for cutters and bacon pigs to 155p/kg.

Calves were a better trade this Tuesday, with a few additional buyers forward. A pure Limousin bull calf realised £540. Blues topped at £440 twice and heifers to £305.

A similar trade for Barrens with a top price of 144p/kg for a 760kg Longhorn from R W Potter & Co, Yeaveley with a 840kg Beef Shorthorn at 135p/kg for Emma Trueman, Flash and a 710kg Aberdeen Angus at 135p/kg for MK & DL Griffin, Alstonefield.

A 625kg Limousin from Emma Trueman realised 127p/kg and a 765kg Shorthorn made 126p/kg for S J Hooley, Macclesfield.

Overall average of 110.84p/kg or £754.78 per head.

Top headage price of £1134 for the 840kg Beef Shorthorn from Emma Trueman, with £1094.40 for Longhorns, £1041.25 for Holsteins and £963.90 for Shorthorns.
Two overage Hereford Steers made 149p/kg for a 680kg steer and 140p/kg for a 725kg steer, both from N A Bonsall, Stanshope.

CLEAN CATTLE(10);

A small entry and not real top quality sorts forward however the cattle on offer sold well to a top price of 213p/kg for a 610kg Angus. Other steers sold to 184p/kg for a 630kg Belted Galloway and 178p/kg for a 570kg Belted Galloway.

Heifers sold up to 178p/kg for a 520kg Limousin from James Forrester, Tean, with a 550kg British Blue at 166p/kg from the same home.

Top headage price of £1299.30 for Angus steers and £1188.45 for Shorthorn steers. Heifers sold up to £925.60 and £913.

A superb day in the Dairy Ring yesterday saw a 100% clearance and 222 milkers sold in just under 4 hours!

Commercials topped at £1820 for a fresh heifer giving 30kg from Messrs Easom.

A tremendous crowd gathered for the dispersal on behalf of the Carter family of Rugby no doubt drawn by the obvious quality on offer. With an annual average of 10,000kg+ and superb herd health, they really were the complete package.

The standard was set with the first cow through the ring reaching £2460. An August calved second calver by Cogent Supershot, she was sold giving 44.4kg and went to John Bayley of Bilstone, Nuneaton.

Another Supershot daughter also reached £2460. Calve with her third also in August she was giving just over 58kg and went to Messrs Swindells of Chelmorton.
Topping the day however was a fresh Redrock-View Klutch heifer at £2520. These were some of the first heifers to calve in the UK by this bull and attracted great interest. She caught the eye of Vic Truman of Melton Mowbray who also took other heifers by Mardi Gras and the same bull at £2300 and £2280.

A buoyant trade right to the end, the herd averaged a superb £1467.

A larger entry forward and trade a little less, particularly for the heavier pigs.

Pork pigs sold up to 126p/kg for a 65kg from J & B Fentem, who also sold a 71kg pig at 114p/kg and a 75kg pig for 113p/kg.

Cutting pigs sold well to a top price of 160p/kg for a pair of 81kg pigs from D J Pope, Thame, with 79kg pigs at 140p/kg from J & B Fentem, who also sold 78kg pigs a 138p/kg and a 82kg pig at 134p/kg. A trio of 83kg pigs realised 128p/kg for H M Carroll, Snelston and a trio of 82kg pigs at 124pkg from D J Pope.

Bacon pigs sold up to 155p/kg for 89kg pigs from D J Pope, Thame, with 150p/kg for 91kg and 101kg pigs from the same home. 143p/kg for a 91kg pig from Bernard Minshull, Buxton and 137p/kg, 136p/kg and 132p/kg for pigs from J & B Fentem.

Heavy pigs topped at 154p/kg for 107kg pigs from S Bailey, Biddulph, with a 111kg pig at J & B Fentem, Alsop. A run of pigs from PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch sold well at 136p/kg, 135p/kg, 132p/kg, 126p/kg and 123p/kg.

Cull sows sold up to 75p/kg twice for 202kg and 204kg sows from Bernard Minshull, with a 295kg sow at 73p/kg from Ray Rowlinson.

More lambs about and a solid trade, being very strong for the best on offer. Less of the best about today, and a much larger proportion of very lean lambs going for further feeding. Nevertheless, an overall average of 238p/kg was achieved for the very mixed sample with the bottom 20% out, the average comes in at 250p/kg.

The usual orders for best heavy lambs are getting more difficult to fulfil. Can you help?? Top headage price of £136.80.

Less than half the numbers we have been used to, probably not a bad thing, due to the lack of overflow penning in the cattle pens due to the large dairy sale.

All classes of sheep very well bid for, except the very lean which are not fit to graze.

Best Texel’s at £168 from D Doughty, Fulford with best Texel ewes generally £140 plus. Heavy Texel Mule ewes to £131, Suffolks to £128 and very best Mules to £118.

Best Texel Rams to £130.

A bigger and better show with quality easy to sell and the second strong sorts very good money. A superb pure Limousin suckler calf at 40 days old sold at a fantastic £540 from John Naylor with a couple of dairy cross Blue and Limousins from Brian Goodwin selling at £440 each. 10 Best over £342. Standard quality sorts £240 – £300 with smaller or plainer calves either side of £200.
