Market Report 28th June

Tuesday market saw dairy heifers up to £2540 with cows up to £2280 for a second calver.

Spring lambs a little back on the week, but the best selling up to 336p/kg or £172.20 with numerous pens 320p and above. Overall average of 296p/kg. Cull ewes in demand once again selling up to £181.

Barren cows sold up to 196p/kg or £1384.75 per head to average 157p/kg. Clean cattle to 220p/kg.

A shed full of pigs this week and selling on a solid trade up to 196p/kg across all weights.

Calves sold well, topping at £380 for a Limousin bull calf and heifers to £275.

A mixed entry forward with the best selling up to 196p/kg for a 540kg Belted Galloway from F Horsford, Croxden with a 565kg Hereford at 194p/kg for D & EA Jeffrey, Roston who also sold a 595kg Montbeliarde for 193p/kg.

A 725kg Hereford realised 191p/kg for Hambleton Bros, Calton who also sold a 695kg Angus for 189p/kg.

Top headage price of £1384.75 for Herefords, Holsteins to £1315.65 and £1275.75 and Angus’ to £1313.55.

CLEAN CATTLE;
Two Aberdeen Angus heifers at 220p/kg for a 720kg heifer and a 620kg heifer at 219p/kg, both from FG, JM & TE Carnwell, Dilhorne.

Another bouncy trade in the dairy shed saw a smashing heifer from the Critchlow family of Cubley top at £2540 with others from the same home at £2280 and £2180.

Cows topped at £2280 for a second calver from regular vendors, the Shepherd family of Bakewell.

Shorthorns were in strong demand with a pedigree heifer from Shirley Kirkham reaching £1940.

Various herd sales have been booked with dates to be announced shortly.

Good trade again from pigs this week and a lot more about, with the best to 196p/kg in all weights. Pork pigs to 196p/kg for 70kg pigs from D B Goldstraw, Meerbrook, with 67kg pigs at 180p/kg from S Proctor, Longnor and 178p/kg for 59kg pigs from P J Barker, Shepshed.

Cutters topped at 196p/kg for 84kg pigs from Massie Farms, Wood Eaton who sold others at 192p/kg, 191p/kg, 190p/kg and 189p/kg (x2). 190p/kg for 77kg pigs from P J Barker, Shepshed and 188p/kg for 82kg pigs from J & B Fentem who also sold 77kg pigs for 187p/kg.

Bacon pigs topped at 196p/kg for 88kg pigs from S Bailey, Biddulph with 192p/kg for 89kg pigs from Massie Farms who also sold 93kg pigs for 188p/kg and 188p/kg for 95kg pigs from J & B Fentem. 172p/kg for 93kg pig from D Goldstraw.

Heavies sold up to 180p/kg for a 106kg pig from S Bailey but generally heavy pigs 80-100p/kg.

Cull sows sold up to 66p/kg 5 times, with others a 64p/kg.

A pen of 23kg stores sold for £23/head from F Sharpley & Son, Twemlow.

SPRING LAMBS (520);
A similar entry selling on a slightly steadier trade, in line with other outlets but still competitive bidding, particularly for the best.

Best selling to 336p/kg from Ian Wilson and family, with better types generally 320p and better. Many more of the best could be sold to vendors advantage.

Commercial quality lambs generally 285p – 310p depending on weight and finish and an overall average of 296p/kg.

Big lambs good to sell topping at £172.20 and plenty at £150/head and better.

BUTCHERS HOGGETS (54);
Very much a tail end entry selling to 220p/kg for the best but majority either very lean or with teeth up.

CULL SHEEP (201);
A good entry selling on a fast trade. Best Charollais ewes to £181 from Geoff Biddulph with Texel’s to £176 and Suffolk’s to £162. Best Mules at £128 and half meated types at £90 – £100.

Overall average of £112/head.

CALVES (121);

Similar numbers overall and solid trade for all but calves have a price and buyers are wary of spiralling feed and ‘on farm ‘costs.

33 Continental Bulls
The best a good trade but a lot of smaller calves amongst the entry. Best Limousin’s sold to £380 for Fred Yates, Longford with the best 10 over £300. Mediums £200 plus look good to buy with smalls generally less than £200.

28 Continental Heifers
Generally harder work to sell with the exception of the best. 5 best over £250 and a top of £275 for a Blue for Messrs Wilkinson, Great Budworth. Mediums £180 – £240 with a few plainer bred calves under £100.
