Market Report 2nd March

A busy Tuesday with a packed Dairy shed with some lovely cattle forward, selling up to £2160 for heifers and 2nd calvers to £2120. A run of in-calf heifers sold up to £1750 twice.
Hogget trade hit another level, with plenty of pens above 320p/kg and SQQ average of 294.85p/kg! If you have stock to sell, then get them to Leek. Top prices of 366p/kg twice, and cull ewes to £145.
Barrens cows are a strong enquiry selling up to 140p/kg twice for black & whites, with clean cattle up to 226p/kg.
More calves about this Tuesday and another great line up of buyers, with Blue bull calves to £425 and blue heifers to £240.

A small entry for the trade that is on offer, and even strong than last week, with a top price of 140p/kg twice for a 805kg Holstein from Foker Grange Farm Ltd, Leek and for a 830kg Friesian from ND Gibbs, Butterton.

Other black and white’s sold at 139p/kg for a 670kg Friesian from SG Salt & Son, Hanbury and 136p/kg for a 905kg Holstein from DJ & KL Leadbetter, Sudbury.

Overall average of 115.7p/kg or £751.14 per head.
Top headage price of £1230.80 for the 905kg Holstein from DJ & KL Leadbetter, with £1162 for Friesians and others at £1127, £1125.60.
A 750kg Hereford Steer from S Davis, Roston realised 148p/kg to gross £1110.

A 575kg Limousin heifer realised 224p/kg from D Williams, Basford, selling to P Lymer of JW Ash Butchers, Leek.
Steers sold to 206p/kg for a 630kg Simmental from B J Bailey, Biddulph Park.

Dairies (122);

Well what a way to start March! Every standing and pen filled with a total of 122 going through the ring over a 100 of which were milkers with a 100% clearance achieved.
Plenty of buyers in attendance set about the days business like they really meant it with the first three cows through the ring from Messrs Armett of Loughborough making £1880, £1770 and £1810. However we were quickly past the £2000 mark for a lovely second calver from regular vendor Richard Green of Whiston. Sold giving 29kg she was eventually clinched by Ed Clowes of Kingsley for £2120.

Hot in pursuit was a stylish heifer from Ray Turner of Rownall that made £2120 to John Moss of Rushton with another from Messrs Nadin of Earl Sterndale to £2100 to Messrs Hunt of Crewe.

Topping the day however was a lovely 30kg heifer from the Phillips family of Winkhill selling at £2160. She too went to Messrs Hunt.

Malcolm Jones of Oswestry saw a very swift trade for his 4 Norwegian Red X heifers topping at £2020 with others to £1910 and £1900.

A lovely run of In-calf heifers from the Enigma herd of Messrs Brown topped at £1750 twice with numerous others in excess of £1700.

Heifer calves were much sought after reaching £320.

Plenty of buyers in attendance for the two special entries which saw Messrs Wilds reach £1390 for a November calved third calver giving 21kg whilst Messrs Holmes of Huddersfield topped at £1520.

Another strong entry this week and trade a little up and down, depending on quality and weight, but great to see a couple of buyers returning.
Cutting pigs sold up to 128p/kg for a 85kg pig from PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch with a pair of 88kg pigs at 110p/kg for J & B Fentem.
Bacon pigs topped at 134p/kg twice for 86kg and 87kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who sold a run of bacon pigs at 132p/kg, 130p/kg, 128p/kg, 126p/kg and 124p/kg.

Heavier pigs topped at 118p/kg twice for 106kg & 118kg pigs from JG Belfield, Sheen, with a pair of 108kg pigs at 116p/kg from Bernard Minshull, and 114p/kg for 109kg pigs from J G Belfield.

Cull sows sold up to 70p/kg for a 169kg sow from C Lyon, Peak Forest with a 225kg sow at 67p/kg for J & B Fentem who sold another sow at 60p/kg and R Rowlinson, Oakamoor sold a 281kg sow at 67p/kg.

OVERALL AVERAGE OF £125.18
Dissappointing to see less number sabout but trade found another level with more customers in attendance and over 1000 head could have easily been sold. Overall average 289p/kg.

Best sorts raced away to 366p/kg (Twice) with best
shaped sorts at 320p and better. Big hoggs a fast trade, topping at £163.15 and plenty at the top side of
£150/head.

A better turnout and a better trade with a good strong line up of buyers looking for numbers.

Some good calves on offer and a solid trade throughout. Best Blues from Andrew Hulme sold up to £425 with G W Myatt at £390 and Philip Holdcroft at £378. Best generally over £325. Mediums £220 – £280 with smalls a little less.

Less on offer which is a shame as numerous buyers looking for calves. Andrew Hulme had £240 for his best with the better sorts generally £200 +. Mediums £130 – £170 with just a few less than £100.

Hereford & Angus Bulls sold to £205 with ‘trade of the say’ being the angus heifers that averaged £188 and sold to £210.

One strong rearer made £108 with the majority £25 – £50.
