Market Report 30th March

The Easter Spring Lamb Show & Sale attracted a lovely show of lambs, and a strong trade for those on offer, with the Champion selling to 700p/kg, and the Reserve Champion at 640p/kg, both shown by Ian & Andrew Wilson, Hollington. Away from the show, another superb trade for both lambs, hogget’s and Ewes.

A strong trade for barren & clean cattle this Tuesday with plenty of buyers looking to secure numbers. Top price of 165p/kg for Holsteins with plenty above 140p/kg and fat heifers up to 218p/kg and bulls to 212p/kg.

Dairies sold up to £1880 twice for fresh heifers, with cows to £1780. Coming up next week a Dispersal of In- calf Heifers and Youngstock, not to be missed!

A huge demand for calves currently, with a super trade selling up to £425 for Limousin bull calves and heifers to £280.
A strong trade for pigs aswell, with numerous pens 130p/kg and above topping at 158p/kg for cutting pigs and bacon pigs to 153p/kg.

Barren Cows (41);

Another excellent trade for Barrens this Tuesday, and a strong entry forward and well fleshed types selling up to 165p/kg for a 590kg Holstein from JJ & PN Holdcroft, Brown Edge, who sold a 560kg Holstein at 158p/kg.
Friesians sold to 161p/kg for a 720kg cow from DR & A Shuker & Son, Bosley and 158p/kg for a 790kg Friesian from Foker Grange Farm Ltd, Leek.

A decent entry forward this week, with top prices of 218p/kg for a 525kg Limousin heifer from Sam Clowes, Rudyard to gross £1144.50.

Young Bulls sold to 212p/kg for a 540kg Limousin from Chris Barnsley, Morridge Top who sold another at 208p/kg for a 585kg Limousin to gross £1144.80 and £1216.80 respectively.

A 800kg Simmental bull realised 184p/kg for a Rushton Spencer vendor to gross £1472.

Another unpredictable trade saw the best to £1880 twice over from Malcolm Trevor-Jones and Richard Lomas for two nice heifers both giving in excess of 30kg.

Cows reached £1780 for a British Friesian second calver from John Kirby of Oakham with another from Robert Hayes of Chesterfield at £1750.

A very good number of pigs forward this Tuesday which met with a strong trade for all types with a couple of returning buyers. Pork pigs sold up to 136p/kg for 69kg pigs from A Worth, Marton, with others to 130p/kg and 127p/kg for 67kg pigs from DH Poulson, Llangadog.

Cutting pigs topped at 158p/kg for 82kg pigs from D H Poulson, Llangadog, who also sold 79kg pigs at 134p/kg. J & B Fentem sold cutters up to 139p/kg for 82kg pigs, who also sold others at 129p/kg twice and 110p/kg.

Bacon pigs sold up to 153p/kg for 89kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with the Parson family, Whitchurch selling bacon pigs up to 150p/kg twice. 87kg pigs sold at 144p/kg for J G Belfield, Sheen, who also sold 91kg pigs at 142p/kg. 142p/kg was paid for a pair of 97kg pigs from S Bailey, Biddulph and 140p/kg for 103kg pigs from J & B Fentem.
Heavy pigs sold up to 130p/kg for 119kg pigs from J G Belfield, who also sold heavies at 128p/kg and 126p/kg . PF & PD Parsons sold an 118kg pig at 123p/kg and a 109kg pig at 111p/kg.
Cull sows sold up to 93p/kg for a 216kg sow from Rosie Watson, with a 252kg sow at 91p/kg for DJ Pope, Thame. Others sold to 84p/kg for Ray Rowlinson, 80p/kg for Rosie Watson and two other sows at 78p/kg and 67p/kg for D J Pope.

Spring Lambs (50);

A superb entry for the Easter Show & Sale of Spring Lambs at Leek, meeting an excellent trade

Ian & Andrew Wilson & family dominated the show winners with a super run of lambs, taking both Champion and Reserve Champion Lambs. Other prize winners are listed below for reference.

The Champion being a single 33kg lamb went on to sell for 700p/kg (£249.60) to Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats,, who also purchased the Reserve Champion for 640p/kg (£231) for a single 39kg lamb.

The whole entry sold on a solid trade throughout, with demand for spring lambs becoming more apparent with demand expected each week from now.
